Jane Ira Bloom Light From A Person

Soprano saxophonist & friend of the proGram, Jane Ira Bloom reunites with legendary vibist David Friedman on her latest recording Light from a Person. Long time collaborators from Bloom’s 1980’s recording days on CBS Records (“Modern Drama”), the duo is joined by renowned bassist Ken Filiano to perform Bloom originals conceived and performed for the experience of surround sound listening. The trio’s sound is luminous with the uncanny connect of Bloom’s soprano & Friedman’s vibraphone and propelled by the deep rhythmic drive of Filiano’s bass. There are ten stunning originals including “Bright Bars,” “Slydini,” “Airspace” & “True City” lit up by Bloom & Friedman’s light saber virtuosity – whether navigating breakneck tempos or lyric ballads, these seasoned improvisers know how to project just the right balance between sound and silence. There’s a special kind of musical light that happens when seasoned performers with a long history playing together vibrate with all the combined knowledge of their musical experience. The sound is both old and new, lyric and motion-filled, spare and light. “Light from a Person” captures these improvisers in all their dimension in high-definition stereo and immersive audio. Since Bloom’s last Outline release “Songs in Space,” (OTL146) the multiple-time Downbeat Critics Poll Winner for soprano sax has recorded a four star ****duo album with percussionist Brian Shankar Adler “once like a spark” (Adhyaropa (AR00155) and has appeared regularly at the Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn, NY with bassist Mark Helias. Bloom returned to the Clive Davis Institute in Brooklyn, NY to record this new trio project in surround sound with her Grammy award team of engineering legends Jim Anderson and tonmeister Ulrike Schwarz. Improvisational art and audio science come together to make this a one-of-a-kind listening experience. Light from a Person is available as both a stereo digital release (OTL147i and immersive digital release (OTL147i) on Oct 22, 2026.

I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Jane to discuss this new release. The music on this alum, along with the feeling of the vibes and the style of the bass have added a happy feeling in a time where those are hard to come by. We talk about the improvisors intention while creating, the time it took to get the final product and the process these three artists went through to get there. We talk about one of the tracks in a little depth as I prepare to air it for the listeners. This is the type of album, as it was recorded to be immersed in, to really feel!

Fugu Dugu’s Olya Prohorova

Fugu Dugu is Chicago’s Wild East Punk band — a female-led collision of Eastern European folklore, klezmer, Americana & punk, delivered with explosive violin, electric guitars, multilingual storytelling and a live energy built to make people move. Rooted in the musical traditions of Moldova and Eastern Europe but unmistakably shaped by Chicago, Fugu Dugu performs in Romanian, Ukrainian, Russian and English, transforming old melodies and folklore into something contemporary, theatrical and defiantly its own. At the center are classically trained violinist and vocalist Olya Prohorova (Madame Broshkina) & guitarist and songwriter Bucky Wanko, whose songs move freely between humor and protest, mythology and modern life. The band has toured 15 cities across the U.S., packed Chicago stages including Old Town School of Folk Music, SPACE and City Winery, and performed and collaborated with artists including The Klezmatics, Vopli Vidopliassova and Enver İzmaylov. Following a breakout appearance at Square Roots Festival, the Chicago Sun-Times described Fugu Dugu as feeling like “attending a raucous Eastern European wedding and standing on the front lines of a revolt at the same time.” This month, Fugu Dugu enters its next chapter with ‘Bucky Wanko and the Legend of Baba Yaga’, an album that pulls Slavic folklore into the present — and its accompanying The Legend of Baba Yaga: East Meets West touring project. The band also appears at Lotus World Music & Arts Festival and heads into 2027 as an Official Showcase Artist at Folk Alliance International.
Fugu Dugu doesn’t preserve Eastern European folklore. They make it dance.

I had such a great time catching up with violinist & vocalist Olya Prohorova (Madame Broshkina) ahead of the October 22nd show in Madison at North Street Cabaret. Olya takes a moment to let us know how she describes just what Fugu Dugu is all about, it’s adventurous way of setting feelings free and a danceable spirit unleashed. During our conversation, it is clear we share a lot of the same views on this music, music in general and part of the job of the sound. I think many people will find that same connection in the music, the live show and the people behind it all. Olya describes the making of the new album ‘Bucky Wanko and the Legend of Baba Yaga’. This leads us down many paths into songs, styles and the Fugu Twist added to a couple of Western Americana classics. At the end of our chat she puts toGether a setlist based around a tune from the new record. No one would be disappointed by any of her choices and let the dancing begin.

Seth Walker Back To Madison

In the midst of recording his 12th album, wavering in his resolve to finish what he’d started, family to the proGram Seth Walker came to a realization. No album is trapped in amber, no song is set in stone. Distance colors compositions over the years and each album is left as a reflection of its own period in time. This idea played a big part in shaping Why The Worry. Now, the other half of knowing is letting go; letting go of the worry about perception, the worry of over-preparation, and the worry that seeps in constantly from the news and noise of everyday life. Why The Worry follows a string of critically acclaimed albums from Walker, garnering praise from NPR to The Washington Post. He’s been found on the road with The Mavericks, The Wood Brothers, Raul Malo, Paul Thorn & Ruthie Foster among others. He recently penned “Moon and Stars” – the title track to The Mavericks new album, sung as a duet with Sierra Ferrell. Walker’s latest album Why The Worry dropped on April 4, 2025 on Royal Potato Family.

Whenever he is heading close by Seth and I find time to catch up. This time he is back in Madison on October 21 at The Bur Oak. We find out some of what to plan for if you have never seen Seth perform live, and on the flip side, if you have, you might find the duo set-up and the potential array of songs to fill a need. We learn a lot more about Aunt Jan Conn, who seemed to introduce everyone in his family and even others, to their first musical instruments. We find out how Seth did while hanging out off the grid like Jan lived as he dug through some of her songs and saw the world through her eyes. he had put out a couple of her tunes too. Inspiring!! Will we find out who won when he and our mutual pal, Oliver Wood played tennis?? We also get a little bit into the latest album ‘Why The Worry’ and discuss how the songs of then feel and grow into the now. If you get time to find out if he is playing near you, like we are lucky enough to have this October 21 in Madison, you will not be disappointed and most likely be uplifted.
