KODO Drummers

When it was announced that the KODO Drummers would be in town back in the summer at the Overture Center, as part of this season’s international Festival, I was completely thrilled as I have always found this show to be one that captivates my feelings of inner connections to my surroundings through sounds. The rhythm and beats which carry rediscovered traditional roots and values come alive and take control one strike of a drum at a time. Moments of silence huddle close to sounds of thunderous storms while bodies cores are being challenged to their pounding limits. There is a primal fierceness but certainly a child-like playful side as well mixing in some humorous musical skits while peeking the audiences curiosity as to where this now moment will lead them. From the moment the drummers came out on stage until the time of the “great drum” the audience was ready to explode with appreciation for this unique fervent flavor, fulfilling the translation of KODOHEARTBEAT. The sounds of taiko is felt in the body as much as it is heard….it is like the pulse of mother nature and while in attendance it may just sit you in her lap and allow the beat of her heart to take you over too.

Celebrate youth

After the show Saturday, went to the Monona Terrace for a gathering to celebrate youth. 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of Wisconsin Youth Company’s annual showcase of youth arts and performance. It’s a day to let young people know how much we value their contributions to our communities. It’s a celebration of the youth in our region and the diversity of their cultures, talents, and interests. We highlight the amazing talent and dedication of our youth, and give them a chance to shine and share their passions. There were multiple stages of youth performances, a visual art exhibit, hands-on activities, and exhibit booths with resources on programs and services for youth and families. It was a day filled with fun for all ages! This year’s theme is “Up in the Air.” The sky is the limit in 2009! The day showcased all things that fly and float. They actually managed to incorporate the beauty, color and captivating nature of kites as well as trapeze, juggling, aviation, birds and much more.

Cheer Accident

I had the chance to chat with drummer/composer/vocalist Thymme Jones the other day as an on air guest to the show, as his band Cheer Accident was rolling into town on Sunday night at the Frequency. The boldness of their new album on Cuneiform, Fear Draws Misfortune comes out in obvious yet unfamiliar contexts. The show is as much of a sound exploration as the album suggests, riveting artistic coherency reaching lush and captivating post rock/art rock even avant-progressive……whatever you want to titled it–it takes you away with an edge of superior musicianship making the tools of the trade and the ideas of their use unconventional—unprecedented and unmatched. From the cover of the winter’s SIGNAL TO NOISE to the underground scene of the windy city, Cheer Accident is a show to be a part of, especially when you want that more to a show you might be looking for. On the album I have quickly fell flat for the interlude escape offered up by “and then you Realize you Haven’t Left yet” to the where is it going to take me feeling left from “Humanizing the Distance”. This release offers the listener some daring boundary erasing experiments set to cause inexplicable reactions.

the WOLFGANG by E. Van Halen

Dutch/American rock star Eddie Van Halen has managed to create a new indestructible guitar with bosses of a top medical tool company. The Wolfgang, which has been named after Van Halen’s son and his band mate, features custom-made stainless steel frets and metal accessories. And Van Halen knows that his new instrument is unbreakable, because he tried to trash it on the last tour. “During the last show, I actually tried to break a Wolfgang, and it wouldn’t break. I picked it up and I couldn’t break the damn thing. I threw it up in the air, and later put it out in the rain. I picked it up half an hour later, and it was still in tune. It p**sed me off,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling CNN. The price for Van Halen’s new guitar has been set at 3,000 dollars. I personally wonder what unique sounds this “Super Hero” of guitars can offer, since you would never need another guitar again if it won’t bust up….also, how will this machine adapt to the advances of the near future and beyond?

Langerado Canceled

Today, the 2009 Langerado Music Festival is cancelled due to sluggish ticket sales. The 7th annual event was slated to happen March 6-8 at their new home in downtown Miami’s Bicentennial Park. Langerado’s independent local promoters, faced with a very tough decision in a dismal economy, cancelled the 2009 event only after every possible option was exhausted. As Langerado Co-Promoter Ethan Schwartz explains, “Langerado has always put the fan experience first. Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it’s become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events. Putting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time.” All tickets purchased will be refunded. Please look for ticket refunds to be processed in the next 5-7 business days. Each order will be refunded to the credit card in full, minus the included order processing fees. Shipping fees will also be credited for those orders that did not select the free shipping promotion. Visit www.musictoday.com for more information.

African Reggae

Now here is a collection I would have loved to have been a part of listening to & tracking down the proper fits for. Putumayo presents, African Reggae, a collection of powerful and vibrant traditional and modern sounds from African musicians in part to pay homage to Bob Marley. His impact on the music of Africa is undeniable..and the theme of unity sung of loudly with hope for liberation and thus influenced each artist on this collection. From Ba Cissoko with Tiken Jah Fakoly and Mo’ Kalamity & the Wizards to One Love Family and Majek Fashek, the Jamaican influence on African music shows that spirit of connective unity betwenn cultures that make a musician like Bob Marley so memorable, and allows for others to build off that familiar rhythm and chants and continue in that ONE LOVE. A portion of the proceeds from this album will be donated to HOPEHIV in support of their efforts to strengthen the capacity of African children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.

Disco Biscuits total jam-a-thon

The night was already a success being the Mrs of the G’s day of birth celebration at a nice eatery and then some time at the Majestic Theater getting into the jams. Future Rock opened up with their amazing light show and a creation of sounds new to the electronic late night scene. Skillfully manipulating live loops, synthesizers, filters and an electronic drum kit, the trio succeeds in creating a larger-than-life sound that sends crowds into frenzies, which is a common outcome here in Madtown. When the Disco Biscuits brought their fusion of trance and jam rock out on the stage I found myself engulfed in the easiness of the transitions and the successful capturing of an audiences ears and more with their explosive livetronica. With a new album to be coming out soon, the Biscuits are certainly poised to defend the cool scene for which I believe they helped pioneer. For more about what’s going on with Camp Bisco….head over here.

Back on somewhat

Well, after many years of decent service…the old computer box is going to be laid to rest after getting sorting through for all the essentials. Got a set-up going that is in “just for now” mode but all should be restored to where it once was right around the corner. Working on setting up a few interviews but with the frigid temperatures outside–I have been in little rush to make my way downtown. Coming up next week will be the Disco Biscuits, which should make the air moist with a certain warmth.
