Doin’ our Thing w/Papa Mali

Papa Mali and I have been trying to connect up for a little bit now and we finally put the pieces together. He has been touring around with Galactic supporting his swampy hot sophomoric release dubbed DO YOUR THING. This album here is one for the books. I tell you, it takes on a storm of sounds, some noticeably familiar to our senses…while others really gives us time to reflect and others still…..time to bob and weave like a funky soul chicken. DO YOUR THING really is an album worth personifying and giving an identity to, it could become one of your best pals. It is warm and welcoming, like Papa Mali himself and it welcomes you in for some spiced gumbo that knocks your socks off. In our chat we get a chance to discuss the new album, the first album and some shared friends in Stanton Moore and J.J. Grey. You can check out Papa Mali’s show coming to Lupo’s with Galactic on March 27th, be sure to bring your voodoo dancing boots and your positive spirit to this one folks.

Melvin Sparks-A FUNKY Good Time.

The night was set..there was a very nice crowd at the Main Pub in Manchester, CT. Melvin was in rare form I thought. You know, it is always good but there was this medley at the end of the night that just blew the house down. A Parliament and P-Funk type jam ensued out of the fog, and I know my head is still spinning from this funkin’ good time. We had real serious dancing grooves going on, sexy mamas out there shaking their booties and there was even a couple of your favorite WHUS DJ’s spotted in the crowd AND on the dance floor. In this conversation, Melvin tells a tale revolving around his first on stage experience with the late/great Mister James Brown.

Check out our chat right here: you dig.

What’s new w/J.J. Grey & Mofro?

I took some time recently to catch up with our friend J.J Grey of the Florida based group Mofro. The new album is doing well and the first leg of the tour has been reportedly “blowing J.J. away”. The fans have been ready for a new album and there should be no disappointment when the get through listening to COUNTRY GHETTO. This album has some noticeable differences throughout and is still, like the others filled with solid songwriting, thoughtful care and flare and possibly an album like no other. But, check out our quick catch up session and get it from the man himself. I’d like to thank J.J and Megan from Madison House Publicity for helping make this happen once again.

A Keller Williams Conversation

Check out my conversation with Keller Williams. The usual one man band has some rather impressive friends on his new album DREAM. We talk about the album, the dog and so much more that you won’t want to miss out. A little background: Singer, songwriter, & guitarist Keller Williams is literally a one-man jam band. His fascinating live shows feature him solo on-stage with a Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro looping unit, and he creates his backing loops in the moment, building and improvising as he goes on his custom-made ten-string guitar, and thanks to his equally as quirky, upbeat, & semi-surreal songs (which he frequently weaves into extended, half-improvised medleys) and his warm, friendly tenor singing voice, Williams is an utterly unique performer whose musical eccentricities don’t keep him from being immediately accessible. This is easy to tell from our chat.

Stanton Moore, a musician’s drummer.

Born and raised in New Orleans (and living there still, when he’s not on the road), Stanton Moore is very much a product of geography, culture and creative networking. He grew up in the thriving music scene of his hometown that included Professor Longhair, Dr John, the Meters and countless other Big Easy mainstays. In the early ‘90s, Moore hooked up with guitarist Jeff Raines, bassist Robert Mercurio and keyboardist Rich Vogel and saxophonist Ben Ellman to form the New Orleans-based “steam-roller” funk band known as Galactic. There is so much to one of the hardest working guys in music, be it educating kids, being involved in multiple side projects (His Trio and Garage a Trois), Moore is credited on so many great diverse albums out there, it was just a matter of time before I got a hold of him as a new found friend of greenarrowradio.

James Cotton…SUPERHARP

2007 is James Cotton’s 63rd year in the entertainment business. What an amazing adventure this man is experiencing with his little harmonica. Congratulations SUPERHARP! Cotton will be playing the Hungry Tiger in Manchester, Connecticut on February 22nd along with another blues legend James Montgomery. Make sure you bring your boogie shoes for this one! Cotton has always been known for having one of the best bands in the business. The line-up for the past several years has been: Slam Allen, guitar, vocals; Tom Holland, guitar; Charles Mack, bass; Mark Mack, drums; and, of course, Superharp, James Cotton. His eyes light up when he talks about his band, “My audience always tells me how I’m doing. If I look out there and don’t like what I see, I work harder.” His audiences are still on their feet, they enjoy themselves as much as he does, and there are still standing ovations night after night. You will have a memorable evening with an international treasure and a true Living Legend of the Blues.

Eccodek’s Andrew McPherson

Rising from the underground of Toronto’s multicultural music melting pot, Eccodek’s visionary blend of downtempo grooves, tribal electronica and world dub is quickly capturing the attention of the international music scene. Andrew McPherson, the mastermind behind the ECCODEK sound, collaborated for several years with musicians from around the world before the 2004 Canadian indie release of his much-anticipated debut recording, More Africa In Us. A chance meeting with Rwandan expatriate Ignace Ntirushwamaboko and Malian vocal powerhouse Samba Diallo resulted in a fusion that none of them saw coming. Anchored by their soulful voices, their passionate performances sit on a mountain of dubby bass, ethnic and urban grooves, spaced out synths and a quilt work of eastern melodies. Andrew and I share a laugh or two, discuss some new projects accomplished and in the works and discuss his new album coming out this April.

Introducing Sara Wasserman,

Music has been a part of Sara’s life from day one. The daughter of Grammy-winning bassist Rob Wasserman, Sara was immersed in a rare musical world from an early age. This experience has molded her into a young artist with whom few can compare. Even though she has been surrounded by many great people of art, what made me want to talk with her is her ability to create her own song & unique musical style. Her musical influences draw from a diverse list of artists, but it is the voice of Sara Wasserman that I believe will be the inspiration of those seeking a fresh blend of expressive lyrics with seductive melodies.. From her soul-stirring ballads to her sensual up-tempo vocals, Sara’s unique take on contemporary melodies is a refreshingly creative approach.

And soon I will be spinning a variety of songs from Miss Wasserman that’ll be sure to fuel your open minds and fill those thirsty earholes.

Feb. 3rd at REAL ART WAYS…

Durán/Schloss/Mitri Trio.
Hilario Durán, Andrew Schloss, and Irene Mitri combine Afrocuban jazz with live electronics and interactive computer music to create a sound entirely their own. While Durán is a world-class jazz pianist and composer from Cuba, and Mitri is a lyrical violinist who has expanded into Latin Jazz. This musical experiment, putting together contemporary Afrocuban jazz and traditional Cuban music with the newest computer music augmentation, has toured across Canada and the U.S.. I had a chance to catch up with Dr. Schloss to discuss the upcoming show and more.
Andrew Schloss is a pioneer in new musical instruments, and a virtuoso on an instrument dubbed the Radio Drum. He has received numerous awards and fellowships: Fulbright Scholar in France at IRCAM/Centre George Pompidou, collaborative composer’s grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, research fellowship from the BC Advanced Systems Institute (ASI), Research/Creation Grant from SSHRC (Social Science and Humanities Research Council), commission from the British Columbia Arts Council, among others. He has been a JUNO Awards judge in the World Music category for several years, as well as a consultant to the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife Programs and Cultural Studies, and other organizations. He has also focused his work on performance and composition with this instrument, using it to explore interactive computer music and improvisation. As a percussionist and computer musician, he has performed with such legendary figures as Tito Puente, Chucho Valdés, and more recently with Rickie Lee Jones and Joe Jackson at the EMP (Experience Music Project) opening concert in Seattle. in my conversation with Dr. Schloss, we will also discuss his business venture called Physiosonics and his involvement with Public Art installations collaborating with several other artists on major installations.

Gary Burton Brings GOOD VIBES…

Jazz legends Chick Corea and Gary Burton debut their virtuoso jazz duets in a cabaret setting at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on Friday and Saturday, January 26 and 27 at 8 p.m. The first collaboration by these trailblazing jazz legends resulted in 1972’s sublime duet album, “Crystal Silence“, the jazz-fusion recording that thrust Corea and Burton into the consciousness of America. Ever influential, and with separate careers that periodically intersect, these kindred spirits have continued to compose, perform and record fresh jazz works that break new ground. Corea has produced a staggering volume of recordings over the past 40 years, and is one of the most prolific composers of the second half of the 20th century. In 2006 he received the Award of the Piano Festival Ruhr in Germany, a lifetime achievement award previously presented to only eight musicians. He also premiered a new piano concerto in Austria as part of the gala Mozart festival in Vienna.
In the 1960s, Burton and his fusion band pioneered the use of electric guitar in pushing the jazz form toward the explosive rock genre. Burton’s innovations in jazz, especially his approach to the vibraphone and his mastery of simultaneous four-mallet playing, have been the hallmark of his 40-year career. He has earned five Grammy awards and 13 Grammy nominations that cross multiple categories and attest to the high regard his music has achieved among his peers.
Don’t miss these jazz virtuosos in their first appearance in Storrs.

LadyBug Mecca come out and play.

Alrighty people, get ready to TRIP THE LIGHT FANTASTIC with LadyBug Mecca of Digable Planets. I am thankful that I was able to catch a moment of her time as she has been stacked with things-a-happ’nin’. In our convo we talk about her recent video work with Raheem DeVaughn and Kenny Dope on a fly hit dubbed “DOGG STARR”. We touched briefly on the MTV unplugged performance of PLANETS for the movie FREEDOM WRITERS, and her honor of being sampled by SNOOP. HELL YEAH! Matter of fact, she has a cameo in SNOOP‘s most recent video “CANDY“. There is much more to this convo so check it out. LadyBug Mecca is cooler than the FONZ, and maybe even TRON. I would love to have the LadyBug and MisterG show some Saturday morning, spinnin’ the eclectic-ness would blow your thirsty earholes and open minds from here to there. We’ll see!

PEACE,
G

What’s cookin’ with Robert Cray?

In my brief conversation with Mr. Cray, we discuss his brand new release, LIVE FROM ACROSS THE POND. The Robert Cray Band’s first ever live release. It is a fantastic double cd set that will give any listener a look into a live show from start to finish. Learn why they decided to finally put a live release together and when the group will be opening up for Eric Clapton next. The Robert Cray Band will be playing live January 12th at the Garde Arts Center in New London CT, and again on January 17th at the Ridgefield Playhouse.

Mike Rivard of Club d’Elf…FINALLY

Micro and I went back and forth like an Olympic table tennis match trying to set up a moment to talk. The new album from Club dElf is title NOW I UNDERSTAND, but rest assured, you won’t. The music is unexplainable and dynamic, at time touching on sounds you’ve heard and at other moments, you will be lead to a new location with your ears driving the train. And that is what it is like, a train of sound that you should ride from song one until the final track to get the complete story told. Be sure that the next time you board that train, it’ll take you on a completely different ride.

Exit Clov brings darkly melodic acid-pop

Exit Clov is a five-piece indie rock band from Washington, DC, described as everything from “darkly melodic acid-pop” to “kaleidoscopic pop noir.” With the punk ethos of Blondie, the political edge of Metric, the pure pop sensibilities of indie darlings Stars, and the playfulness of Shonen Knife, the band has a broad appeal that transcends ordinary music genres. Since its conception in 2003, they have established a trademark sound with beautiful harmonies sung over infectious synth, violin, guitar, bass and drums. While the band’s sound is golden to the ear, they are consistently raw and fresh beyond traditional rocknroll standards. Exit Clov have to their credit two self-produced EPs (2004 Starfish, 2005 Saskwatch), the Jolly Roget Sessions (2006) — on which they enlisted the help of Roger Greenawalt (No Doubt, Ben Kweller, Iggy Pop, White Stripes) — and the newest, Respond Respond EP, released on Livewire Recordings. I had them here and was able to squeeze out 3 acoustic renditions of their unique tunes and a little chatter after. I dig Exit Clov, now it’s your turn.

Buddy Guy’s BOX SET, Can’t Quit the Blues

Robert Cray says that Buddy Guy’s guitar solos sound like laughter from space, but they can also peal like the cries of lost souls attempting to cross the River Styx. If these 47 songs on three CDs plus a DVD boasting a new 75-minute documentary and six performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival prove anything, it’s that Guy is one of the most dynamic, diverse, expressionistic, and emotional guitarists–in any genre. The set neatly examines the 70-year-old Chicago blues legend’s half-century career, starting with a ragged but soulful “The Way You Been Treating Me” cut in 1957 at a radio station in Guy’s native Louisiana that finds him developing his searing, exploratory style. A year later, he’s in Chicago working with tunesmith Willie Dixon, and the rest is history (chronicled in Anthony DeCurtis’s excellent lines notes) that leads from the glory days of Chess Records to Guy’s early breakout recordings for Vanguard to his modern-day mastery. The most recent recordings often find him working with acolytes: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keb’ Mo’, Jonny Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, and John Mayer (who duets with Guy on the unreleased “I’d Rather Be Blind, Crippled & Crazy“). B.B. King, who along with Guitar Slim was Guy’s most important early influence, also joins Clapton and Guy on a stirring acoustic version of John Lee Hooker’sCrawlin’ Kingsnake.” This set shows that Mr. Guy is always growing as a musician–not only as a player whose frenzy, improvisational instincts, and tonal control keep stretching with age, but as a stylist who was unafraid to put aside his trademark electric approach in 2003 to make the acoustic Blues Singer/primal North Mississippi juke joint music part of his gig.

Listen to my chat w/Mr. Buddy Guy here.
