Alrighty people, get ready to TRIP THE LIGHT FANTASTIC with LadyBug Mecca of Digable Planets. I am thankful that I was able to catch a moment of her time as she has been stacked with things-a-happ’nin’. In our convo we talk about her recent video work with Raheem DeVaughn and Kenny Dope on a fly hit dubbed “DOGG STARR”. We touched briefly on the MTV unplugged performance of PLANETS for the movie FREEDOM WRITERS, and her honor of being sampled by SNOOP. HELL YEAH! Matter of fact, she has a cameo in SNOOP‘s most recent video “CANDY“. There is much more to this convo so check it out. LadyBug Mecca is cooler than the FONZ, and maybe even TRON. I would love to have the LadyBug and MisterG show some Saturday morning, spinnin’ the eclectic-ness would blow your thirsty earholes and open minds from here to there. We’ll see!

In my brief conversation with Mr. Cray, we discuss his brand new release, LIVE FROM ACROSS THE POND. The Robert Cray Band’s first ever live release. It is a fantastic double cd set that will give any listener a look into a live show from start to finish. Learn why they decided to finally put a live release together and when the group will be opening up for Eric Clapton next. The Robert Cray Band will be playing live January 12th at the Garde Arts Center in New London CT, and again on January 17th at the Ridgefield Playhouse.

Robert Montgomery (Bobby or Bob) Knight (born October 25, 1940 in Massillon, Ohio, USA), known as The General, is the head men’s basketball coach at Texas Tech University. He previously held the same position at Indiana University and the United States Military Academy. Knight is one of NCAA Division I college basketball’s most controversial coaches in terms of his behavior. On December 23, 2006 Coach Knight tied Dean Smith for most coaching victories with 879. He passed Smith on January 1, 2007 with a 70-68 win over New Mexico. Coach Knight takes average players and makes them understand the game. He doesn’t get a bench filled with future NBA all-stars, but takes a group of young men who think they know the game of basketball, and shows them a completely different game. Almost like he has had a different seat the whole time. Coach Knight, although a media favorite because he answers the questions his way, he motivates his way BUT he WINS, like a TEAM.

The SUBDUDES: Behind the Levee

In 1987, four musicians got together for what they envisioned would be a one-time performance at Tipitina’s in New Orleans. It was a night of mostly acoustic music – sparse instrumentation with a strong emphasis on songwriting and vocal harmonies. The show far exceeded expectations, and on that March night the subdudes were born. Nearly 10 years later, after five well-received albums and several years of hard touring, the subdudes called it quits. Spinoff projects ensued, as did the occasional reunion show. Finally, in February of 2002, three of the four original band members decided to get back together. They recruited additional longtime friends to fill out the sound and called themselves the Dudes, but the music was still unmistakably the subdudes. An homage to old New Orleans — Behind the Levee relies on guitar, accordion and tambourine to back up the well-shaped harmonies of singer Tommy Malone and his fellow singers. With elements of bluegrass and zydeco accenting a time-tested approach to rock, the band — Malone, John Magnie, Steve Amedée, Tim Cook and Jimmy Messa — bridge the gap between their roots, which extend from New Orleans to Denver and beyond.

Tracks 1,3 & 9 are some standouts on this album produced by Keb’ Mo.

James Brown’s Passing

n 1986, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And rap stars of recent years overwhelmingly have borrowed his lyrics with a digital technique called sampling. His work has been replayed by the Fat Boys, Ice-T, Public Enemy and a host of other rappers. “The music out there is only as good as my last record,” Brown joked in a 1989 interview with Rolling Stone magazine.”Disco is James Brown, hip-hop is James Brown, rap is James Brown; you know what I’m saying? You hear all the rappers, 90 percent of their music is me,” he told the AP in 2003.
Born in poverty in Barnwell, South Carolina, in 1933, he was abandoned as a 4-year-old to the care of relatives and friends and grew up on the streets of Augusta, Georgia, in an “ill-repute area,” as he once called it. There he learned to wheel and deal.

“I wanted to be somebody,” Brown said.

Micro and I went back and forth like an Olympic table tennis match trying to set up a moment to talk. The new album from Club dElf is title NOW I UNDERSTAND, but rest assured, you won’t. The music is unexplainable and dynamic, at time touching on sounds you’ve heard and at other moments, you will be lead to a new location with your ears driving the train. And that is what it is like, a train of sound that you should ride from song one until the final track to get the complete story told. Be sure that the next time you board that train, it’ll take you on a completely different ride.

Exit Clov brings darkly melodic acid-pop

Exit Clov is a five-piece indie rock band from Washington, DC, described as everything from “darkly melodic acid-pop” to “kaleidoscopic pop noir.” With the punk ethos of Blondie, the political edge of Metric, the pure pop sensibilities of indie darlings Stars, and the playfulness of Shonen Knife, the band has a broad appeal that transcends ordinary music genres. Since its conception in 2003, they have established a trademark sound with beautiful harmonies sung over infectious synth, violin, guitar, bass and drums. While the band’s sound is golden to the ear, they are consistently raw and fresh beyond traditional rocknroll standards. Exit Clov have to their credit two self-produced EPs (2004 Starfish, 2005 Saskwatch), the Jolly Roget Sessions (2006) — on which they enlisted the help of Roger Greenawalt (No Doubt, Ben Kweller, Iggy Pop, White Stripes) — and the newest, Respond Respond EP, released on Livewire Recordings. I had them here and was able to squeeze out 3 acoustic renditions of their unique tunes and a little chatter after. I dig Exit Clov, now it’s your turn.

Buddy Guy’s BOX SET, Can’t Quit the Blues

Robert Cray says that Buddy Guy’s guitar solos sound like laughter from space, but they can also peal like the cries of lost souls attempting to cross the River Styx. If these 47 songs on three CDs plus a DVD boasting a new 75-minute documentary and six performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival prove anything, it’s that Guy is one of the most dynamic, diverse, expressionistic, and emotional guitarists–in any genre. The set neatly examines the 70-year-old Chicago blues legend’s half-century career, starting with a ragged but soulful “The Way You Been Treating Me” cut in 1957 at a radio station in Guy’s native Louisiana that finds him developing his searing, exploratory style. A year later, he’s in Chicago working with tunesmith Willie Dixon, and the rest is history (chronicled in Anthony DeCurtis’s excellent lines notes) that leads from the glory days of Chess Records to Guy’s early breakout recordings for Vanguard to his modern-day mastery. The most recent recordings often find him working with acolytes: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keb’ Mo’, Jonny Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, and John Mayer (who duets with Guy on the unreleased “I’d Rather Be Blind, Crippled & Crazy“). B.B. King, who along with Guitar Slim was Guy’s most important early influence, also joins Clapton and Guy on a stirring acoustic version of John Lee Hooker’s “Crawlin’ Kingsnake.” This set shows that Mr. Guy is always growing as a musician–not only as a player whose frenzy, improvisational instincts, and tonal control keep stretching with age, but as a stylist who was unafraid to put aside his trademark electric approach in 2003 to make the acoustic Blues Singer/primal North Mississippi juke joint music part of his gig.

Jerry Wennstrom: The Inspired Heart

At age 29 Jerry Wennstrom set out to discover the rock-bottom truth of his life. For years he questioned the limits of his creative life as a studio painter. After destroying all of his art and giving away everything he owned, he began a life of unconditional trust, allowing life to provide all that was needed. He lived this way for 15 years. Jerry’s story is told in his book, The Inspired Heart: An Artist’s Journey of Transformation (foreword by Thomas Moore) published by Sentient Publications and in the Parabola Magazine documentary film called In the Hands of Alchemy: The Art and Life of Jerry Wennstrom. Jerry travels internationally lecturing, teaching and presenting his film and work and he writes a monthly piece on the spirit of the times for a New York City consulting firm. He has presented at the Birmingham Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the EMP (Experience Music Project), Glen Arbor Art Association, the Old Firehouse Art Center, Other Side Arts, Pacifica Graduate Institute, UCS-NAROPA (Wisdom University), the Vancouver Public Library, Western New Mexico University, California Institute of the Arts and NYU. He has also done over 50 radio, TV and magazine interviews and art features. And he was a guest recently on greenarrowradio for your learning pleasures.

Bo Diddley..Bo Knows how he feels.

This conversation will prove that. Bo Diddley knows how to rock and roll, he knows how to entertain an audience, but I learned that he also likes to talk about the things that are going on. Who better than Bo to talk about how things look from a perspective he has gained just weeks short of his 78th Birthday. Bo Diddley will be at the Mohegan Sun on Sunday December 17th.
