A few words w/Dr. Lonnie Smith

Dr. Lonnie Smith is an authentic Master of the Hammond B3 organ. For over five decades he has furthered the sound of Jazz Organ, created a worldwide fan-base, and revealed his musical talents on over seventy albums. Today, his name is truly synonymous with the instrument. Lonnie Smith has consistently been a leading force in jazz since 1969 when critics for Downbeat magazine hailed him as ‘Top Organist of 1969.’ More recently he has been selected as ‘Organ Keyboardist of the Year’ by The Jazz Journalist Association in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

There is so much more to the man, I caught up with him after a period out on the road and I kept it brief so he could just relax.

Listen here to Dr. Lonnie Smith tellin’ me it’s all my fault.

Who is Xavier Rudd?? Find out here.

Through the conscious and heartfelt songs composing Solace, the U.S. debut of Australian surf/roots artist Xavier Rudd, there’s stories of the mistreatment of the indigenous people of his homeland and songs about humanity, spirituality and the environment, compassionate songs encouraging understanding and looking to celebrate life. And running through those songs are all sorts of instruments: guitars, shakers, didgeridoos, Weissenborn slide guitars, Tongue drums, stomp boxes, djembes, harmonica, ankle bells, and slide banjo—and they’re all played by Rudd. Even more impressive, though, he recreates these songs live—playing the guitar, didgeridoo and various percussion parts simultaneously—using a unique stage set-up that finds him literally surrounded by his various instruments and singing from behind a stand holding three didgeridoos (of different keys). It’s a sight to behold for sure, one that’s drawn him a “one-man band” label from impressed critics, a tag that makes him grin: “I never really planned all the stuff I have around me. I never sat down one day and said, ‘I’m going to have all these things around me and I’m gonna try to use it all at once.’ It just sort of grew. I would just add things here or there. Sometimes I look at my setup now and I laugh.”

Wade Schuman of Hazmat Modine

HAZMAT MODINE draws from the rich soil of American music of the 20’s and 30’s through to the 50’s and early 60’s, blending elements of early Blues, Hokum Jugband, Swing, Klezmer, New Orleans R & B, and Jamaican Rocksteady. The band is fronted by two harmonicas which use call and response, harmony, melody, and syncopated interweaving rhythms. The band includes tuba, guitar, and percussion, claviola and Hawaiian steel guitar. The band’s sound reflects musical influences ranging from Avant-garde Jazz to Rockabilly and Western Swing to Middle-Eastern, African, and Hawaiian musical styles. Wade Schuman plays Diatonic Harmonica, Guitar, Banjitar and is lead vocals. If you are not aware of Hazmat Modine or the Album BAHAMUT, I encourage you to take a few minutes to listen to Wade and I talking about the mighty manifestation known as HAZMAT MODINE.

What are you doing November 18th?

Why don’t you head on down to the Main Pub in Manchester CT and catch the Jamie McLean Band, that’s right the Jamie McLean formerly of Dirty Dozen Brass Band. While the Dirty Dozen groove is infectious & timeless, the sideman guitar slinger slot holds it’s limitations. Having always been a songwriter, singer and front man, Jamie began to focus on his roots and in the early part of 2004 he formed his own group the Jamie McLean Band. Over the past year and a half Jamie’s songwriting, filled with catchy hooks, beautiful lyrics and scorching guitar work has mingled with the soulful gumbo of the deep south and while The Jamie McLean Band is based in New York City, the influences of southern rock, blues, R&B and funk is unmistakable. Jamie McLean Band will be touring in support of This Time Around throughout the year. We are fortunate to get them on November 18th. Look for their entertaining and energized sets throughout the Northeast and across the country this year both on their own and supporting national artists.

ScrapOmatic: Alligator Love Cry

Here is an album for those of you with a taste for something soulful, playful and has a whistling captivation that’ll have you tapping your feet and smiling with each note. The sound is alive with critters never seen before and although this music is certainly ROOTS music, it is the origin of this species of sound that requires many ears to listen, and perhaps someone will identify this rare treat. Mike Mattison on vocals charges the emotion of each song llowing us to climb right into the lyrics. Paul Olsen‘s guitar is like liquid magma, solid and flowing magically, weaving its own path with destinations at time unknown.
If you could take the guts out Tom Waits, the soul of James Browns‘ soul, and the spirit of one Mississippi John Hurt and put them all into an old cooking pot, that special ingredient that MA sprinkles on to give it that SOMETHING DIFFERENT must be SCRAPOMATIC.

Bobby Previte & The Coalition of the Willing

In the great tradition of instrumental, electric guitar-fueled rock comes Bobby Previte‘s “super bar band,” The Coalition of the Willing. A new and exciting powerhouse machine pulling together musicians from different worlds to play Previte’s wisting, hard hitting tunes. Featuring the legendary Charlie Hunter, putting aside his eight string guitar to pick up a six string for the first time in years; Skerik, the one-named saxophone legend, hailing from the fighting city of Seattle, where he has been famous to a few for his seminal work in punk-jazz bands including Garage-a-Trois (with Charlie Hunter & Stanton Moore); Robert Walter, the paradigm shifting soundmaster on Hammond Organ; and, leading the Coalition charge, Bobby Previte on drums. This can’t miss show will be on Nov 4 – Northampton, MA at the IRON HORSE Cafe. ARE YOU ONE OF THE WILLING?

What is DAWG Music? Ask David Grisman.

I was fortunate enough to get the chance to talk with Mr. Grisman as he was busy at work in his studio. We had a conversation revolving around music and the idea of individual style and form. The names Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis are thrown around with Stephane Grappelli and one mention of Jerome Garcia. David Grisman started his musical career in 1963 as a member of The Even Dozen Jug Band. His nickname, “Dawg” was affectionately assigned by his close friend Jerry Garcia (the two met at a Van Hoy Campground (NC) back when they used to host the old time fiddlers convention). “Dawg Music” is what he calls his mixture of bluegrass and Django ReinhardtStéphane Grappelli-influenced jazz, as highlighted on his 1977 album “Hot Dawg“. Stephane Grappelli played on a couple of tracks on the Hot Dawg album and then the 1981 recording “Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman Live“. It was his early fusions with Reinhardt-era Jazz that led to the formation of the genre known as newgrass. Grisman, along with New Grass Revival are generally considered the modern day Bill Monroes to this new bluegrass-influenced sound. Bonnie Raitt‘s album, Sweet Forgiveness features Grisman on mandocello throughout the album.

Rest Peacefully Sandy West.

Sandy West was proud to be one of the founding members of The Runaways. While most teens were attending high school full time and planning for the prom, Sandy and The Runaways were forging a musical legacy. They were partly responsible for the punk movement, and played with or inspired bands like The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and Blondie.
After the band’s breakup, Sandy teamed with Lita Ford for a short period and continued to play. She fronted The Sandy West Band in the 80s and has appeared from time to time with former bandmate Cherie Currie. She released an EP of her own material and became an artist on Rocket City Records. Over time, Sandy proved that she was much more than just a hard rocking drummer. She was also a talented front-woman, guitarist and songwriter, and often jumped from drums to the lead mic during shows. Sandy has inspired a wide number of drummers, male and female alike, and attacked her drums with a passion reserved for those who were truly born to play.
In 2006, Sandy was diagnosed with cancer and passed away after a hard fight on October 21, 2006. Besides leaving behind a musical legacy, she left a great number of people who love her dearly. Her influence remains strong in everyone who knew her, appreciated her and loved her and in all the drummers who picked up the sticks “to be just like Sandy West.”

Talkin’ w/Easy Star’s Michael Goldwasser

The Easy Star All-Stars are a collective family of some of the finest reggae musicians in the New York area. The band features a rotating cast drawn from a talented pool of players, meaning that every show has its own nuances and its own life. The masterminds behind the All-Stars are Easy Star musical director Michael Goldwasser (a.k.a. Michael G), his production partner Victor Axelrod (a.k.a. Ticklah), and his two Easy Star label partners Eric Smith and Lem Oppenheimer. These four were the team behind the album Dub Side of the Moon (2003), which was a complete reggae re-vision of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. That record has been locked on the Billboard charts for over 3 years.
Three years later—while the album continues to register on the Billboard Reggae Catalog Chart—Easy Star is released their concert DVD, Dub Side of the Moon Live, on June 27, 2006. While over thirty musicians contributed to the Dub Side CD, the DVD finds a tight and crystallized live touring band. Following this release came Radiodread on August 22, 2006. The long awaited reggae version of Radiohead’s OK Computer.

Live Music is Better.

This past week I have had the best time. Having a sit down dinner and conversations with Mike Mattison and Paul Olsen from ScrapOmatic. Then the fellas reminded the people at Toad’s Place in New Haven what it is all about. The howlin’ soul of Mike’s voice along with the perfectly place notes of Mike’s guitar, they play off each other with a jester’s spirit while those in attendence kept in tune while clapping along. It was like being with a group of friends around a bon-fire, in the woods, deep in the woods. If you like your music with some soul and you like your people real..this is the band for you.

I also had the chance to catch up with Devon Allman and his band Honeytribe. Pedro Arevalo plays slide, George Potsos on bass and Jack Kirkner on keys and Mark Oyarzabal on drums…this band brings the kitchen sink out each night, with authentic blues rock with a handshakes worth of soul. The synergy of this band on stage is something to behold. Shifting from fiery delta blues standards to their own rock-based material, this band inspires all who bear witness to their live performances. Honeytribe has something for all music lovers.

Get out and see both of these acts whenever possible, but in the meantime keep your thirsty ears tuned into greenarrowradio to hear ScrapOmatic and Honeytribe and a whole world of new music for your open minds. LIVE MUSIC IS BETTER…BUMPER STICKERS SHOULD BE ISSUED!

Peace,
MisterG

Anoushka Shankar speaks w/ Mr.G?

Oh it is true. If you recall, my very first conversation was with Pundit Ravi Shankar, almost one year ago exactly. Ms. Shankar is as talented as she is beautiful, and I feel honored to have the opportunity to chat with her while she was relaxing at home in California. The eastern leg of her RISE tour begins mid-October and if you can find a way to make it, you must. Learn more about it at Anoushka‘s website.

Please treat yourself to our conversation here.

10/7/06…Tigers are better than Yanks.

I can’t help myself. This was one of my best shows yet, I find myself drawn to the fact that the Detroit Tigers dismantled the Yankees and are heading to the ALDS. Anyway, this show starts off rocking and never looks back. I featured my conversation with Anoushka Shankar, which was a true gift for me. Check out the direction the show takes, constantly switching gears and filling up those thirsty earholes with sounds that are new and different.

Matisyahu…Hasidic Reggae Music

Coming to the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts October 24th, Matisyahu brings his uniquie sound of Jewish reggae music to Storrs. Matisyahu is currently getting some success in the mainstream with the live version of the song ‘King Without a Crown‘, which has broken into the Modern Rock Top 10; an accompanying video and new album – ‘Youth‘ – produced by Bill Laswell were released on March 7, 2006. On March 16th Youth was Billboard magazine’s #1 “Digital Album” and as of April 4th stands at 16th on iTunes’ top album. Also, his most recent accomplished output of exposure was his live showing in front of over 80,000 people at the Bonnaroo Music Festival 2006. In November 2005 Matisyahu was among the top 5 members in the American Jewish community in The Forward [2]. Matisyahu was given an Esky for Most Lovable Oddball in Esquire’s 2006 Esky Music Awards. The magazine called him “the most intriguing reggae artist in the world.” In an interview with Chabad.org, a popular Jewish website, Matisyahu states that “All of my songs are influenced and inspired by the teachings that inspire me. I want my music to have meaning, to be able to touch people and make them think. Chasidism teaches that music is ‘the quill of the soul.’ Music taps into a very deep place and speaks to us in a way that regular words can’t.”

Always a work in progress: Tom Rush

Tom Rush is a gifted musician and performer, whose shows offer a musical celebration…a journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become. His distinctive guitar style, wry humor and warm, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues. Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s and the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences.” Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences. Rush has long championed emerging artists. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor, and in more recent years his Club 47 concerts have brought artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin to wider audiences when they were just beginning to build their own reputations. Tom will be singing, playing, and story telling October 6th at the Riverside in Danielson. This is a must see event.

Mike Mattison of Scrapomatic talkin’ RAW.

Some of you might know Mike Mattison as the voice of the Derek Trucks Band. Well, he also has a project with music partner Paul Olsen called Scrapomatic. With a brand new release set for Oct 10th called Alligator Love Cry, Scrapomatic will be on the stage of the infamous Toad’s Place Thursday, October 5th. Oh, you can hear some of the artsist that have been inspirations along the way, this is a fresh sound that reminds you why you like music in the first place. A raw blend of blues, soul, and sometimes silly that I am sure will be even better live and in person. Listen to greenarrowradio for tunes off the new album and a review of the show if you cannot make it. Thanks to Blake and Nancy for helping set this up and thanks to Mike for being flexible in his schedule.
