Voice of a Bridge

Had the chance to discuss the Steel Bridge Songfest taking place on June 11-14 in beautiful Door County WI USA with one of the many involved in the project, pat mAcdonald. Four days of music and discovery based around the well-being of an historic steel bridge which for many stands for so much more than mere traffic distribution. They Often Cry Outreach

St. Lucian roots reggae artist Taj Weekes launches TOCO SOCCER in St. Lucia, through his charity They Often Cry Outreach (TOCO), by bringing hundreds of soccer balls, uniforms and equipment to both primary and secondary schools and local charity groups on the island. The soccer gear will be distributed during a press conference in the Conference Room at the Olympic Committee, Olympic House in Barnard Hill on Friday, May 29th at 1:00 pm. Built on the belief that one soccer ball can be not only a source of joy to a child but also improve health, self-discipline, self-esteem and confidence, TOCO SOCCER was inspired by Weekes’ own childhood in St. Lucia, where he experienced first-hand the benefits of the game. Building these traits in children strengthens their ability to move through society with the knowledge that they can live beyond their circumstances and take responsibility for their own health and well-being, an important element in diabetes prevention, so prevalent in St. Lucia today. Through TOCO’s recent efforts, BIOLA University of Southern California has pledged five annual scholarships to qualified soccer players who exhibit strong grade point averages and testing scores. These scholarships will be awarded to St. Lucian students through TOCO SOCCER and are an exciting asset to the charity’s mission. TOCO is collaborating with RISE (St. Lucia) Inc. for this event and is honored to have the support of Dr. Jacqueline Bird and Dr. Stephen King, the latter whom will be addressing the group at the press conference. RISE and TOCO share the common goal of supporting and engaging youth so that they may take the lead in their own development and contribute something of value to the community as well. They Often Cry Outreach (TOCO) was founded in 2008 by Taj Weekes in effort to help underprivileged, at-risk and orphaned children in the Caribbean and beyond through sport, enrichment, educational and wellness programs. With the support of the World Association of Former United Nation Interns and Fellows (WAFUNIF), the International Consortium of Caribbean Professionals (ICCP) has named Taj Weekes a Goodwill Ambassador to the Caribbean in recognition of his efforts through TOCO.

Mörglbl in MADISON

I had my face and backside rocked off last night at the Crystal Corner Bar as the power trio from France called Mörglbl kicked it into overdrive and just kept on going. Supporting an album that is to be released in the states beginning of June, the Primus-like-Vai power jazz for the deaf sound crept through the crowd into waiting ears as riffs turned into rips that shredded the air between amp and ear. These guys have a blast rockin’ too, with antics that will lift a smile out of you with a drumming backbone that comes right out at you encouraging a foot to stamp and a head to bop with a metal spring. Christophe Godin (known as the best guitarist in France) certainly kept the strings bent heavy and you could almost smell the fire coming off the frets as he tore thru the neck in ways that spoke in an accent at times to me. For me, not too much can beat a serious power trio, and Mörglbl has now even added to what I once thought was a fair definition to that term…If Prog rock is something you like to experiment around and you’ve somehow missed these guys, let me lead you to the water…and DRINK!

pat mAcdonald & MelanieJane

Stopped by the Overture for a little Thursday after hours music and beverage and the show was Pat mAcdonald & MelanieJane. The songs were of biting humor and rock and roll with just enough of a bluesy touch where you could feel the heads bobbing with a certain known understanding. Pat creates songs that people want to hear and share with people they care about. These songs carried a load of tongue and cheek humor easily caught for those paying attention…..I found the new sounds and songs to be a bit refreshing and the delivery was certainly something to be seen in person. MelanieJane seems to backbone the sounds with her rhythm makers and percussive ways while busting out the electric cello at times to further captivate the listening ears..I have a feeling you’ll be hearing a little more about these two coming up in the near future on greenarrowradio…Stay Tuned.

Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks

On a Friday night you want to be entertained right? Of course. Whether Friday or not, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks is a guaranteed smile waiting to happen, and then there is also the music. On this night at the Majestic Theater, We were privileged to feature a CD release party in an intimate seating gathering of swing jazz and sassy wit. “Tangled Tales” is the new album from Mr. Hicks and the Hot Licks, offered on Surfdog Records. There was shameless and face-slapping plugs about the new releases as one can easily gather when the title track was played with an uncanny innuendo that only could be fitting in the middle of a tune…..There were several treats of the new release, but none hit me as much as the groups version of Horace Silvers’ “Song for my Father”….jazzy to perfection. “Long Come a Viper” was the song of the night for me, as it toyed with me and kept filling me up and wanting more, while an old favorite “I Scare Myself” set that smile and extra hop in my bounce in motion. Every time I get the chance to interview Dan and then see his show live, I come away wishing that everyone has a chance to get a little Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks in their week.

R.I.P. Wayman Tisdale

Wayman Tisdale, who scaled the heights in two high-profile careers as a professional basketball player and a chart-topping recording star, died May 15 of cancer at a hospital in Tulsa. He was 44…..” That is how the article in the Washington Post starts, but from knowing some folks who know him so very well, there is so much more to the man, the smile, the grace and the talent. You as a caring and observant person will be able to find out Wayman’s basketball stats (An incredible college career, an Olympic gold and a long NBA career) and locate the tunes he created by going to many varied musical getting spots of your liking~but it is from the people who knew him best that i recall how the “Big Man” was a gentle soul with a smile that made things better….I will staill be able to share Wayman’s music with you but there’s more to pass along. Before his tragic death on May 15, 2009, he created The Wayman Tisdale Foundation, which is committed to making a difference in the lives of individuals with cancer as well as amputees. “I believe the best way to help is to provide support and resources. I know we can make a difference one person, one family at a time”.

Putumayo’s Italia

The newest release from our friends at Putumayo features artists inspired by the jazz influenced songs that can be heard as soundtracks in many cafes and bar scenes in Rome, Milan and other Italian cities in the 50’s. This album has a focus on the contemporary singer-songwriters who have taken the sounds of those cafes & bars and changed them slightly to reflect the times, the global differences since the 50’s and the forward moving land that is Italy. There are tangos, sambas and rich gypsy rhythms combined in this collection, which is a sequel of sorts, and the songs selected remind us of the carefree energy and optimism of Italy’s postwar years. It is always difficult to recommend tracks for you to check out and I will be spinning songs off of Italia soon for your sampling pleasure, but some of my immediate favorites are: Il Mare Mi Salva by Rossomalpelo, Il Vaaggio by Gianmaria Testa and Iquique by Rocco De Rosa. Think the Spirit of la dolce with contemporary flair.

Charlie Hunter Duo~”Shhhhhhhhh”

What can you say about Charlie Hunter that hasn’t been written before….well at tonights show he and drummer Simon Lott were all over the place, musically and otherwise..at one point reminding the crowd that it is a show and to “SSShhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”. There were moments in the set that seemed to be reactionary jams to the sometimes “Sorority” loudness coming from overthere…Simon Lott is an incredible force on the skins…watching him play added to the show as he and Charlie both make facial movements that redefine the duo term, since with those MUGGS it seems like 2 others join in at times. Watching Charlie up-close is like witnessing the birth of a new animal, one undiscovered until that moment, never knowing what’ll turn out to be…until…it morphs……He makes those strings come to life, but more importantly it IS a life of their own. I am someone who likes to see what else a musician like Charlie Hunter does with his talent, his projects and collaborations are wide and varied and that is a formula for airplay on greenarrowradio.
