It was a day where Victor DeLorenzo and I got toGether once aGain for another edition of Frail Pagans. We spoke about the Violent Femmes getting back together at playing Cochella (Vic is gonna ring in and give me an exclusive from the shows)……How getting back to the songs that means so much to so many has been a great feeling, but also that sense of who knows still lurks around. I’ve been following this story for what seems to be…no wait..it HAS BEEN years….I had the opportunity to speak to Ronny Drayton today, not because of his credits and status as a talented musician but because his son, Donovan has been incarcerated for years at Rikers Island without a shred of evidence to prove that he was guilty of anything, nevermind the terrible crime of murder. This conversation lasted a half of an hour and was a very heavy deal, which I know boiled the blood of many of the listeners out there. Please take the time to read Donovan and Ronny’s story written by friend of the proGram, Mr. Greg Tate and when you feel those words, hearing Ronny describe the situation (as deeply as he could), was so intense and emotion filled…..it was meaningful to be a part of it…and my hope and Ronny’s hope is that the next time he and I speak will be to share new music projects he is constantly involved/evolved in….as well as to celebrate the freedom of Donovan. While it stopped seeming important, there was music attached to this conversation…the three songs following the conversation w/Ronny are off a new album you can look into here (to help the cause).

I want to thank Mike Dillon for being a guest on the proGram. Mike is one of those musicians who happens to be involved with many projects that I have shared throughout the years. It is always a pleasured reminder when speaking to artists like Mike of why I choose to do radio, and especially the conversation with the artist themselves part. The Mike Dillon Band is in town opening for Umphrey’s McGee at the Orpheum and we discussed what the set up for that would be, including the players in the band, the instrumentation and the way this New Orleans Punk sound works along-side what other bands do. We spoke of the differences his new release “Urn” provides a listener, the experience of dead flowers in a vase vs. live flowers…We even touched on how some of those other projects of his (Garage a Trois, Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade) make their way into this new album and a live show.
