I got the GRASS & Blues

We made it to the Congress Theater after running into some of the great Chicago traffic we all hear about….this helped ease into the rippin’ blues that Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials were delivering as we made our way into the mouth of the theater. Lil Ed is a true showman and the skills of the band had the joint jumpin in rhythm and howling with the feelin’. I am big on Lil Ed!! Majors Junction picked their family style grass to the pleasure of the crowd, with tantalizing twanging, smiling faces and sweet sounds, Majors Junction was quick into the hearts of those with listening ears. In between all of the acts is a picking circle high up in the balcony, sort of Muppet show like at times with the spotlight hitting them up just right-they kept your foot stomping while waiting for the next act to follow on the big stage. In the front of the house was a second smaller stage filled with bands a plenty knockin’ it into the next big act in the great room. Ha Ha Tonka, neither blues nor bluegrass made its way on stage to a warm reception. These boys like to rock and with harmonies and moments of a’capella–they sure have a sound worth checking into on any billing. But the reason for my getting involved in this festival, the David Grisman Quintet made an immediate impact as soon as the Dawg and his mates took the stage. This is no ordinary act, no easy way to categorize Blues/Bluegrass or otherwise, this is a fusion of global quiet music set to the time of another place…a space occupied and polised up by the Dawg himself. I watched the crowd try to believe what they were seeing when that little Mandolin made such sweetness on stage. I look into the dreamy eyes of those witnessing the Quintet for the first time in complete amazement that these “old timers” could be so damn electrified without being plugged in. Chicago’s Don Stiernberg joined the group on stage for a few tunes and before you know it, the set was through leaving David and the audience ready for the next time. Closing out the evening was the Avett Brothers. Somehow these fellas have figured out a way of capturing true Americana in a bottle and releasing it at will onto those who never knew and those who love them so. I was somewhere in the middle when the night started and now am a fan. I am already looking forward to next year’s potential as this was the first go around for this festival, while the kinks are worked out—start preparing yourself for next year’s event now.

JJ Grey’s Orange Blossoms

Heading into Madison this Sunday is JJ Grey and Mofro..bringing that sweet Southern Soul to a place that’ll keep warm to music like this. JJ’s newest album Orange Blossoms is making a splash all around music, hitting the tops of charts all over and we spend a little time here visiting with the album and its relationship to one other album of Mofro’s that seems to have a similar feel. Orange Blossoms is another Alligator Records release and this one is finding JJ in full musical bloom himself. There are hard hitters and soulful swayers, it is a complete album that is comfortable in its roots and the main people behind its blossoming, JJ and Producer Dan Prothero. There is a beautiful bevy of bandmates on this release and all of them deserve the same recognition I give to JJ, as I am sure he would tell you—it wouldn’t be the same without ’em.

Mister Rourke’s Terrorvision

Just in time for the Trick or Treaters…Mister Rourke’s TERRORVISION made it’s devious little way to my doorstep and I have been scaring, I mean sharing it with you ever since. The scratches are rhythmic and rowdy and believe it or not…this is one scratch album that has a plot and a story. We also learn something very interesting about Rourke’s project Guvna Dub, there is a special sax player working on the new project—a friend of greenarrowradio no doubt? If you never thought you were one for it, try it. We also spend some quality time talking about life, Elf Music and a couple of different ways in which inspiration is gained thru the eyes and ears of this scratch sculptor Mister Rourke.

FUNKY Beatles track released?

LONDON (AP) — Paul McCartney says it’s time an experimental Beatles track saw the light of day. McCartney says he wants to release “Carnival of Light,” a 14-minute experimental track the Fab Four recorded in 1967 but never released. The band played the recording for an audience just once, at an electronic music festival in London. It reportedly includes distorted guitar, organ sounds, gargling and shouts of “Barcelona!” and “Are you all right?” from McCartney and John Lennon. McCartney said during a recording session at Abbey Road studios he asked the other members of the band to “just wander round all of the stuff and bang it, shout, play it. It doesn’t need to make any sense.” “I like it because it’s The Beatles free, going off piste,” he told the BBC in a radio interview to be broadcast Thursday. Extracts of the interview were published Sunday in The Observer newspaper. McCartney said he still had a master tape of the piece and “the time has come for it to get its moment.” McCartney, usually regarded as the most melodically minded Beatle, told the BBC he had a long-standing interest in avant-garde music. He said “Carnival of Light” was inspired by experimental composers John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. He said he had wanted to include the track on the Beatles’ “Anthology” compilation, but was vetoed by his bandmates. McCartney would need permission from Ringo Starr and the widows of Lennon and George Harrison to release the track.

MITCH MITCHELL, 1947 – 2008

Mitch Mitchell, the legendary drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, died in his sleep of natural causes, US medical tests revealed. Mitchell, 61, whose fusion style allowed him and one of history’s greatest guitar players to feed off each other, was found early on Wednesday in his room at the Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon. His last days were spent celebrating the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix on the 2008 Experience Hendrix Tour. For nearly 4 weeks the tour travelled coast to coast in an 18-city tour in the US finishing in Portland. In addition to Mitchell the tour featured Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Cesar Rosas, David Hidalgo, Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford, Hubert Sumlin, Chris Layton as well as Eric Gales and Mato Nanji. The Mitch Mitchell Trust has been established to manage the MMT Drug Rehabilitation Through Music programme based in Bettws, Newport in Wales.

Rotonova with Razl

What exactly is Intergalactic dirty guitar grooves for earthling weirdos. Razl (Raul Huelves) discuss that and more on his highly infectious guitar-and-beyond ridden groove-a-thon, Rotnova. We take the time to discuss the positives and let’s call them some learned experiences about putting out your own work, and we learn some insight as to who Razl would love to form a touring trio with, then the fun of imagining it begins. This album is for us earthling weirdos focused on funky fusion of a jazzed world experience meshed with the sound of maybe how Robots might play?

We spend time talking about the making of the new album, have I mentioned it’s called SHIVA boom(?), on-going projects and thoughts about potential and hopeful future fusion collaborators. Currently SHIVA boom sits at #13 on the CMJ charts in the World category…and the love is just beginning around here. Get yourself in a spot to take a direction unknown around the globe journey that album # 3 from Eccodek is ready to provide—a charm!

Billy Martin:3/26/08 Heinen Theater

Known for his galaxy creating percussion work in Medeski Martin & Wood, Billy Martin is more than the music he creates. There is a soulful path to his avant sound exploits, there are reasons he ends up where he begins musically. This video is one of those special treats you sometimes (often) don’t get to be a part of-Vongole Films presents a rare live solo performance of Billy’s known in words as: COCONUTS FEEDING BIRDS. While the name itself conjures up odd images and the guessing of what sounds can represent this title—it becomes a thrill to watch, not just hear the avant thought expressed with rhythm and beats-and while you might not have been there originally, it is captured and caged for constant research and further experimental enjoyments–released on Billy’s Amulet Records-this is a live recording from The Heinen Theater HCC Central College Department of the Fine Arts. There are many reasons I would reccomend this video, but I want you to find out your very own likings, but for me the discussion of the master class experience, the chosen instruments, and the accompanying soundtrack to the photographic slideshow were all worth the first time view-thru!

Known for his work in the 80’s with Hanoi Rocks and current work in New York Dolls, Sami and I actually spent time talking about a recent project and new album: Mad Juana’s Bruja on the Corner is a different species of gypsy swinging rock, with mystery and an allure still undefined. We spend a little time talking about some of the previous gigs Sami has had in his career, including time with some of greenarrowradio’s pals, we also find out what Sami’s set-list built around Mad Juana would look like and when you might get a chance to see them live at a venue near you..and you.

Song & Dance Ensemble of W.Africa

wasd.jpg
The two dozen singers, dancers and instrumentalists who make up the Song and Dance Ensemble of West Africa create a rhythmic feast drawing on a variety of influences including traditional Griot songs, reggae, and the sounds of the kora, a 21-stringed instrument of the lute family used across West Africa. Blending the traditional music of Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Ghana, Benin, the Ivory Coast and Mauritania with a contemporary flair, this show brought the land of stories right to our doorsteps in Madison. The players were in top form, challenging one another with style and speed. Rhythm never lacking. The women singers and dancers brought the feel of Mother Earth, or Mother Land clear into the forefront and the lush crowd at the Overture was often caught in rounds of applause. After the show, I had a chance to spend a moment with Mr. Dembele and the Ensemble with laughs shared, this was a show that keeps traditions alive.
