“G”roovin’ w/the New Mastersounds

Had the chance to do a live on air phone interview with Eddie Roberts, guitarist and producer of the soulful entity known as the New Mastersounds. Hailing from Leeds, UK these guys know how to funk the lights out of it from top to bottom and start to finish. This one was special to me as I just absolutely dig the sound they produce, a Meters twist with a splash of dirty moss covered rock and groove~(from bone crushing drum beats to mind melting organ fingertromping bass defying bass flaps and the righteous-NESS of funky git-tar riffs). With a new album out and a Mid-west tour to support it, one of my favorite bands (been spinning them since I first started radio) made their way to a city that appreciates solid soul-felt funk. During the conversation, I asked Eddie to play a track for the ladies , The Minx and not only did the band rip it out and twist it up with a funky-ass know, the MisterG introduction was one for the books. Thanks Eddie. Matter of fact…here is the evenings set list:

Opening the night was Moon Taxi, a jammin’ rock outfit from Nashville, Tennessee with some funky riffs that warmed it up just right.

David Sanchez at The Union

David Sanchez weaves the multi-cultural threads of North and Latin American cultures into a colorful musical tapestry, the common ground being the spirit of the drum. Sanchez’ robust sound, taut melodic focus and stirring rhythmic articulation reflect a talent wise beyond his years. His sense of originality transcends mere technical concerns. Sanchez is searching for fresh ways to enrich the jazz vocabulary. “I wanted to be in touch with my roots,” says Sanchez, “which come from Latin America. I believe that Latin jazz was born in the U.S., but I also believe that we are really one: North America, South America, the Caribbean. There are native people in these places who are related to each other. I’m trying to put that together in my music, trying to get in touch with the unity of it all while I integrate the stylistic elements from the different regions.” In late 1991, Dizzy Gillespie spoke glowingly of his latest protege, “There’s a young tenor player from Puerto Rico – the youngest member of the United Nation Orchestra – … David Sanchez, good, very reserved mind, very old mind, knows his changes, knows where he’s going and knows where he’s coming from.” Unarguably one of the most important and exciting young artists to emerge on the jazz scene in recent years, Sanchez’ uncommon talent, dedication and personal charisma will assuredly place him among the giants of jazz in the coming years….oh and by the way, he has since been awarded a Grammy….and on this night the room felt what mentor and student work so hard to achieve–oneness. This was the headline event for the Isthmus Jazz Fest and spirits were uplifted thrrough Mr. Sanchez’ saxophone and tight tight band…man were they tight.
Before the David Sanchez show I caught a set from the Tim Whalen Nonet, which totally made Coltrane’s Alabama come out to play while dazzling a filled up room at der Rathskeller at the UW with improvised spirit and soul.

Isthmus Jazz Festival

Now in its 21st year, the Isthmus Jazz Festival is a two-day celebration of America’s homegrown art form. The free festival kicks off the summer season in one of Madison’s most beautiful outdoor settings, the Memorial Union Terrace, with Lake Mendota as a glittering backdrop. A diverse crowd of students, jazz aficionados and casual fans fill the tables to hear a lineup that reflects a century’s worth of jazz styles. Dixieland, big-band swing, bebop, Latin jazz and free jazz are all part of the mix, along with contemporary derivations like funk and hip-hop. The festival is committed to honoring jazz’s glorious tradition while keeping one eye fixed on the future.

Sax Master Sam Butera R.I.P.

sambutera.jpg

Sam Butera, the hard-driving, hard-swinging New Orleans saxophonist who was Louis Prima’s longtime musical partner, died Wednesday in Las Vegas following a long illness. He was 81. Mr. Butera joined Prima’s band in 1954. With singer Keely Smith, they built one of the most popular acts in the golden age of Las Vegas. Mr. Butera cooked up the arrangements that gave the likes of “Just a Gigolo”/ “I Ain’t Got Nobody” and “Jump Jive An’ Wail” maximum impact. “Louis’s ace-in-the-hole was Sam Butera,” said Gia Prima, the fifth of Louis’s five wives and the singer in his band from 1962 to 1975. “That animal attraction that they had, with Sam’s honking sax and Louis’s jumping and jiving — without Sam, Louis couldn’t have pulled it off.” Mr. Butera grew up in the 7th Ward. His father owned Poor Boys Grocery & Meat Market. One evening the elder Butera took his son to see a big band, and asked the boy which horn he liked the best….”The saxophones were closest, so I pointed to the saxophones,” Mr. Butera recalled in a 1996 interview. “The next day I had a horn.”

R.I.P QUEEN of the blues

There was a moment where even the blues took a break, Grammy Award-winning blues legend Koko Taylor, 80, died on June 3, 2009 in her hometown of Chicago, IL, as a result of complications following her May 19 surgery to correct a gastrointestinal bleed. On May 7, 2009, the critically acclaimed Taylor, known worldwide as the “Queen of the Blues,” won her 29th Blues Music Award (for Traditional Female Blues Artist Of The Year), making her the recipient of more Blues Music Awards than any other artist. In 2004 she received the NEA National Heritage Fellowship Award, which is among the highest honors given to an American artist. Her most recent CD, 2007’s Old School, was nominated for a Grammy (eight of her nine Alligator albums were Grammy-nominated). She won a Grammy in 1984 for her guest appearance on the compilation album Blues Explosion on Atlantic.

Please see the entire news piece from Miss Taylor’s website here and take a moment to remember how she sang those blues to you.

Dale Watson the Trucker Session II

Maybe it was because on of my favorite people in the world when I was younger, grandpa was a truck driver, maybe not….I have always dug certain country sounds and let me tell you Dale Watson has exactly what I search for. On Hyena Records, the Truckin’ Sessions Vol. 2 is a tribute to the truck driving men (even a truck drivin’ queen) and pays great homage to those who commandeer the mighty 18-wheeler rig as a way of live. His soulful baritone voice tells you to listen and it means it…..his songwriting is so sharp I listen and feel like I am aboard the rig myself. Some of the tales carry on with wit and others take loneliness & sadness and gives them a face atop the body of these mystical characters on America’s highways. I often wonder about the tales of the road that grandpa NEVER told me about….

They Often Cry Outreach

St. Lucian roots reggae artist Taj Weekes launches TOCO SOCCER in St. Lucia, through his charity They Often Cry Outreach (TOCO), by bringing hundreds of soccer balls, uniforms and equipment to both primary and secondary schools and local charity groups on the island. The soccer gear will be distributed during a press conference in the Conference Room at the Olympic Committee, Olympic House in Barnard Hill on Friday, May 29th at 1:00 pm. Built on the belief that one soccer ball can be not only a source of joy to a child but also improve health, self-discipline, self-esteem and confidence, TOCO SOCCER was inspired by Weekes’ own childhood in St. Lucia, where he experienced first-hand the benefits of the game. Building these traits in children strengthens their ability to move through society with the knowledge that they can live beyond their circumstances and take responsibility for their own health and well-being, an important element in diabetes prevention, so prevalent in St. Lucia today. Through TOCO’s recent efforts, BIOLA University of Southern California has pledged five annual scholarships to qualified soccer players who exhibit strong grade point averages and testing scores. These scholarships will be awarded to St. Lucian students through TOCO SOCCER and are an exciting asset to the charity’s mission. TOCO is collaborating with RISE (St. Lucia) Inc. for this event and is honored to have the support of Dr. Jacqueline Bird and Dr. Stephen King, the latter whom will be addressing the group at the press conference. RISE and TOCO share the common goal of supporting and engaging youth so that they may take the lead in their own development and contribute something of value to the community as well. They Often Cry Outreach (TOCO) was founded in 2008 by Taj Weekes in effort to help underprivileged, at-risk and orphaned children in the Caribbean and beyond through sport, enrichment, educational and wellness programs. With the support of the World Association of Former United Nation Interns and Fellows (WAFUNIF), the International Consortium of Caribbean Professionals (ICCP) has named Taj Weekes a Goodwill Ambassador to the Caribbean in recognition of his efforts through TOCO.

Mörglbl in MADISON

I had my face and backside rocked off last night at the Crystal Corner Bar as the power trio from France called Mörglbl kicked it into overdrive and just kept on going. Supporting an album that is to be released in the states beginning of June, the Primus-like-Vai power jazz for the deaf sound crept through the crowd into waiting ears as riffs turned into rips that shredded the air between amp and ear. These guys have a blast rockin’ too, with antics that will lift a smile out of you with a drumming backbone that comes right out at you encouraging a foot to stamp and a head to bop with a metal spring. Christophe Godin (known as the best guitarist in France) certainly kept the strings bent heavy and you could almost smell the fire coming off the frets as he tore thru the neck in ways that spoke in an accent at times to me. For me, not too much can beat a serious power trio, and Mörglbl has now even added to what I once thought was a fair definition to that term…If Prog rock is something you like to experiment around and you’ve somehow missed these guys, let me lead you to the water…and DRINK!

mörglbl.jpg

pat mAcdonald & MelanieJane

Stopped by the Overture for a little Thursday after hours music and beverage and the show was Pat mAcdonald & MelanieJane. The songs were of biting humor and rock and roll with just enough of a bluesy touch where you could feel the heads bobbing with a certain known understanding. Pat creates songs that people want to hear and share with people they care about. These songs carried a load of tongue and cheek humor easily caught for those paying attention…..I found the new sounds and songs to be a bit refreshing and the delivery was certainly something to be seen in person. MelanieJane seems to backbone the sounds with her rhythm makers and percussive ways while busting out the electric cello at times to further captivate the listening ears..I have a feeling you’ll be hearing a little more about these two coming up in the near future on greenarrowradio…Stay Tuned.

Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks

On a Friday night you want to be entertained right? Of course. Whether Friday or not, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks is a guaranteed smile waiting to happen, and then there is also the music. On this night at the Majestic Theater, We were privileged to feature a CD release party in an intimate seating gathering of swing jazz and sassy wit. “Tangled Tales” is the new album from Mr. Hicks and the Hot Licks, offered on Surfdog Records. There was shameless and face-slapping plugs about the new releases as one can easily gather when the title track was played with an uncanny innuendo that only could be fitting in the middle of a tune…..There were several treats of the new release, but none hit me as much as the groups version of Horace Silvers’ “Song for my Father”….jazzy to perfection. “Long Come a Viper” was the song of the night for me, as it toyed with me and kept filling me up and wanting more, while an old favorite “I Scare Myself” set that smile and extra hop in my bounce in motion. Every time I get the chance to interview Dan and then see his show live, I come away wishing that everyone has a chance to get a little Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks in their week.

R.I.P. Wayman Tisdale

Wayman Tisdale, who scaled the heights in two high-profile careers as a professional basketball player and a chart-topping recording star, died May 15 of cancer at a hospital in Tulsa. He was 44…..” That is how the article in the Washington Post starts, but from knowing some folks who know him so very well, there is so much more to the man, the smile, the grace and the talent. You as a caring and observant person will be able to find out Wayman’s basketball stats (An incredible college career, an Olympic gold and a long NBA career) and locate the tunes he created by going to many varied musical getting spots of your liking~but it is from the people who knew him best that i recall how the “Big Man” was a gentle soul with a smile that made things better….I will staill be able to share Wayman’s music with you but there’s more to pass along. Before his tragic death on May 15, 2009, he created The Wayman Tisdale Foundation, which is committed to making a difference in the lives of individuals with cancer as well as amputees. “I believe the best way to help is to provide support and resources. I know we can make a difference one person, one family at a time”.
