R.I.P. Rashied Ali

Rashied Ali, whose expressionistic, free-jazz drumming helped define the experimental style of John Coltrane’s final years, died Wednesday in Manhattan. He was 76.
In the mid-1960s, he joined Elvin Jones as a second drummer with Coltrane’s ensemble at the Village Gate in November 1965 He recorded with Coltrane and Jones on the 1965 album “Meditations” and, after replacing Jones as Coltrane’s drummer, on the duet album “Interstellar Space” (1967), one of the purest expressions of the free-jazz movement. On his own Web site, his playing is described as “a multi-rhythmic, polytonal propellant, helping fuel Coltrane’s flights of free-jazz fancy.” Born Robert Patterson into a musical family in Philadelphia. He started out on piano and dabbled with trombone and trumpet before finding his way to the drums, which he began to play seriously while serving in the Army. On returning to Philadelphia, he played in local rhythm and blues and rock and roll groups before moving on to jazz and moving to New York in 1963, where he played with progressive jazz musicians like Don Cherry, Pharaoh Sanders, Archie Shepp and Albert Ayler. After Coltrane’s death in 1967, he toured Europe and, returning to New York, opened Ali’s Alley, a club intended as a showcase for free-jazz musicians. It operated until 1979. From the 1980s until his death, Mr. Ali performed and recorded with several avant-garde groups, including Phalanx and Prima Materia, an ensemble devoted to interpreting the music of Coltrane and Ayler. Most recently he performed with the Rashied Ali Quintet, which he formed in 2003.

May he rest peacefully.

Jazzed at Five

Madison jazz legends Ben Sidran and Richard Davis first played together in 1975. Over the years, they’ve played countless performances, (including an infamous tour of Wisconsin prisons in the 1980’s), and made several records together. This is their first time sharing the stage since the closing concert of the Oscar Mayer theater in 2004. Ben and Leo Sidran have also been performing together since the late 70’s, when Leo was a boy. They continue to record and perform together around the world, and in 2003 they launched the Nardis Music label to showcase their work. Leo relocated to New York in 2005. Joy Dragland, a former Madison mainstay, also moved in 2005 to New York, where she and Leo record and perform under the name “Joy and the Boy”. In Madison, Joy was a protege of both Richard Davis and Ben Sidran. Louka Patenaude is a Madison treasure, an original musician and composer and he joined in on a few selections to add a little guitar to the set.

This is the first time all five artists will perform together and it was as great as it sounds…..The mixture of styles and family familiarity made the fingers snap, the toes tap and the smiles widen.

Brazilian Cafe

Our friends over atPutumayo really have gone out of the way to make me chill out with some sensuous slow samba, soothing bossa nova and jazz from Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Salvador and beyond. Putumayo’s Brazilian Café is an enchanting addition to its Café series. Brazilian Café brings together a captivating selection of samba, bossa nova and jazz by Brazilian stars and up-and-coming talents. In the early 1960s, legendary Brazilian composers Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes hung out in an Ipanema beachside café where they would often see a beautiful neighborhood girl, Helô Pinheiro, walk by. She became the inspiration for one of the most popular songs of all time, “Girl From Ipanema.” The global bossa nova boom can be traced to that moment of musical inspiration at a Brazilian café and most of the artists on this CD drew inspiration from Jobim, de Moraes and other songwriters who followed. With this release, Putumayo continues to demonstrate the strong connection between food and music. In addition to collections such as Music from the Wine Lands and Music from the Coffee Lands, more than 15 of the label’s CDs include recipes. Brazilian Café features recipes for cafezinho, a Brazilian coffee drink, and pavê de cafê, a popular Brazilian coffee dessert. Putumayo’s previous Café collections, Italian Café, French Café and Café Cubano, have sold one million copies.
