Coach Knight…Winning with less.

Robert Montgomery (Bobby or Bob) Knight (born October 25, 1940 in Massillon, Ohio, USA), known as The General, is the head men’s basketball coach at Texas Tech University. He previously held the same position at Indiana University and the United States Military Academy. Knight is one of NCAA Division I college basketball’s most controversial coaches in terms of his behavior. On December 23, 2006 Coach Knight tied Dean Smith for most coaching victories with 879. He passed Smith on January 1, 2007 with a 70-68 win over New Mexico. Coach Knight takes average players and makes them understand the game. He doesn’t get a bench filled with future NBA all-stars, but takes a group of young men who think they know the game of basketball, and shows them a completely different game. Almost like he has had a different seat the whole time. Coach Knight, although a media favorite because he answers the questions his way, he motivates his way BUT he WINS, like a TEAM.

James Brown’s Passing

n 1986, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And rap stars of recent years overwhelmingly have borrowed his lyrics with a digital technique called sampling. His work has been replayed by the Fat Boys, Ice-T, Public Enemy and a host of other rappers. “The music out there is only as good as my last record,” Brown joked in a 1989 interview with Rolling Stone magazine.”Disco is James Brown, hip-hop is James Brown, rap is James Brown; you know what I’m saying? You hear all the rappers, 90 percent of their music is me,” he told the AP in 2003.
Born in poverty in Barnwell, South Carolina, in 1933, he was abandoned as a 4-year-old to the care of relatives and friends and grew up on the streets of Augusta, Georgia, in an “ill-repute area,” as he once called it. There he learned to wheel and deal.

“I wanted to be somebody,” Brown said.

Someone I’d like to be…Mr. Ed Bradley

I hope to get podcasts from as many 60 minute staff members, family and friends to do my part in giving back the way I think Mr. Bradley would. Let’s be sad for a moment and then celebrate this special life. It is his style and “conversation” versus “interview” approach I believe I have tried to model myself after. I invite you to head HERE to better learn just what kind of person he really was.

Rest Peacefully Sandy West.

Sandy West was proud to be one of the founding members of The Runaways. While most teens were attending high school full time and planning for the prom, Sandy and The Runaways were forging a musical legacy. They were partly responsible for the punk movement, and played with or inspired bands like The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and Blondie.
After the band’s breakup, Sandy teamed with Lita Ford for a short period and continued to play. She fronted The Sandy West Band in the 80s and has appeared from time to time with former bandmate Cherie Currie. She released an EP of her own material and became an artist on Rocket City Records. Over time, Sandy proved that she was much more than just a hard rocking drummer. She was also a talented front-woman, guitarist and songwriter, and often jumped from drums to the lead mic during shows. Sandy has inspired a wide number of drummers, male and female alike, and attacked her drums with a passion reserved for those who were truly born to play.
In 2006, Sandy was diagnosed with cancer and passed away after a hard fight on October 21, 2006. Besides leaving behind a musical legacy, she left a great number of people who love her dearly. Her influence remains strong in everyone who knew her, appreciated her and loved her and in all the drummers who picked up the sticks “to be just like Sandy West.”

Jackie Robinson Foundation Golf Outing

If you recall my conversation with Della Britton Baeza, the JRF’s 2006 golf outing was to be held at the Lake of Isles golf club at Foxwoods. I was invited to volunteer, and that is just what I did. The work portion was fun and the weather was beautiful. I am not one to get star struck over too many “famous” people, but meeting Rachel Robinson was pretty awesome. A true connector to a living legend, and one who helped start carrying on Jackie’s amazng legacy. There were several names and faces that were easily recognizable from the world of professional sports, big business and even the big screen. I made fast friends with someone I cherish as an individual and then a ballplayer, “El Tiante“, Luis Tiant. He invited me to join him over breakfast and for 20 minutes we talked pitching. From brushbacks to 0-2 counts, we hit a lot of subject matter in the brief time we spent together. We talked about some of what makes the greats great, like how to learn how to walk before you can run, especially as a pitcher. As our conversation concluded, I asked him for one favor, “May I see your ring?” I asked with eyes obviously buldging out of my head. He didn’t even stop talking about wasting one in the dirt on an 0-2 count as he slipped the ring from his finger and into my awaitng hand. It fit just fine, just fine indeed.

I want to thank Della, Gary and Michelle for letting me give a little of my time back to a cause that just keeps on making champions. I am proud to have been associated with the Jackie Robinson Foundation for this one, beautiful day.

On the Bus with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

Mr.GandMs.Jett2.jpg

Oh it was hot. The entire time. However it was worth every drop of sweet rock and roll sweat that rolled between my buttcheeks. I had the honor of being put on Ms. Joan Jett’s guest list and was treated very well by all. Got on the Blackheart bus, which was a fine source of air conditioning also might I add. Immediately began chatting with Manager/Producer Kenny Laguna. A hell of a nice guy with a lot to talk about. I am all ears. Ms. Jett was cooler than the aforementioned A.C. I want to thank Elliot and Julie for the experience and the show. The set consisted of a nice mix of old and new. Joan started off with Bad Reputation and Ch-ch-ch Cherry Bomb, Change the World, ACDC, Riddles and Five, off of Sinner the new release that if you don’t have you need to go get. They closed down with classics, Crimson and Clover and I love Rock and Roll. It was a good as that list looks. Stay tuned for a conversation with Kenny Laguna and another visit with the band before the September 1st show at the Woodstock Fair in Woodstock CT.

Thanks to the BLACKHEARTS.

Dickey Betts in Enfield. Thanks to Pedro.

The Mrs. of the G and I were fortunate enough to hook up with Pedro Arevalo, the bass player for Dickey Betts Great Southern. We were treated like part of the family right away, introduced to many of the members of the band including Twinkle, D-Wayne and even Mr. Betts himself. We were hanging out on the tour bus talking about music and life. We watched the show from right next to the stage and we held onto our backstage pass like it was a true gift. The whole experience was like being invited to the family picnic and needing nothing but a good attitude, and fun will be had by all. And it was. Thanks to Pedro and DBGS for allowing us to be apart of the family for one night.

Check out some of the photos from the show.

Go Get ‘Em Pete.

Guitarist Pete Townshend of The Who has posted a statement on his website announcing the band’s intentions to record every show of their summer UK tour. Knowing that Who shows are currently bootlegged illegally, Townshend, with the approval of lead singer Roger Daltrey, conceived a plan to bootleg the shows himself and then donate the proceeds to charity. The band will also Web cast a live, 30-minute stream from every show for 99 cents, with the proceeds going to local health and children’s charities. Wow, this Townshend fellow is a hell of a guy! But, wait, he’s not quite done! 10 dollar lottery tickets will be sold at the shows for a chance to win the last guitar Pete ever smashed on stage, with that money benefiting the New Orleans Appeal. The band will also sell BitTorrent downloads and offer podcasts through iTunes. Why are they doing all of this? “BECAUSE WE FUCKING WELL CAN,Townshend states on his site.

Desmond Dekker Dead At 64

Ska and reggae pioneer Desmond Dekker died Wednesday, May 24 of a heart attack at his home in Surrey, England. Dekker, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica, had a string of hits both in his home country and in the UK. His most well known singles included “Israelites,” “Rudie Got Soul” and “007 (Shanty Town).” Many of his songs were about rudeboy culture, glamorizing the lifestyle for the growing mod subculture in 1960s England. Dekker is credited for bringing world attention to Jamaica‘s ska and reggae movements, as well as paving the way for artists like Bob Marley. Dekker continued to record into the ’70s, though the singer declared bankruptsy in the ’80s when Two Tone ska fans dwindled. A re-release of “Israelites” and a full touring schedule up until his death kept Dekker busy.

Elvis’ Legacy Joining Cirque Du Soleil

I am a huge Elvis fan, so this news seemed interesting to me.
Elvis Presley is going on a worldwide circus tour. CKX Inc., the parent company of Elvis Presley Enterprises, announced a long-term joint venture Thursday with Cirque du Soleil, the Canadian-based acrobatic troupe known for its extravagant theatrical and acrobatic productions. Cirque du Soleil (French for circus of the sun) will produce a series of shows focused on Presley‘s life and music and help design interactive, multimedia museums called “Elvis Experiences,” CKX said. Touring productions are expected to get under way in about 18 months in Europe and Asia with the first of a series of “Elvis Experience” museum opening later in 2008, Sillerman said from his headquarters in New York. . CKX also owns the American Idol TV show and other entertainment ventures. Cirque du Soleil, begun in 1984, is scheduled to stage 13 shows this year, including one set to open in Las Vegas next month based on the music of the Beatles.

David Bowie Curates NYC Festival

The one and only David Bowie will curate the inaugural High Line Festival. The new music fest is slated to take place in May 2007 in neighborhoods underneath the High Line, a public park being created atop a long-abandoned elevated railway line on the west side of Manhattan. The festival will feature David Bowie performing a huge outdoor concert, his first show in New York since 2003. Bowie will also pick musicians and artists to appear throughout the festival. Bowie told Billboard.com, “I’ve been particularly excited about seeking out emerging artists and giving them a place in a festival that will also feature some very well-known names.”

Well, Bowie does have his hand and wallet in the new indie scene. Expect some very good music to come out of this festival, especially with the hippy starchild himslef getting into the mix.

Wie makes cut on Asian Tour

Maybe I am a sucker for her cuz she’s so darn cute and seems loveable, but the truth is she is a golf player. Not female or male, but a golf player.
Wie finished at 5-under 139 after two rounds and tied for 17th at the Sky 72 Golf Club course, six strokes behind co-leaders Iain Steel of Malaysia (66) and Prom Meesawat of Thailand (64). The cut was even-par 144.
The Hawiian-born teenager becomes the second woman to make the cut at a men’s tournament in South Korea. LPGA star Se Ri Pak finished tied for 10th in the lower-tier KPGA Tour SBS Pro-Golf Championship in 2003. Wie improved on her opening-round 70 with a near flawless display Friday, making four birdies and one bogey on the 16th hole.

“My putting was good,” she said. “Yesterday was pretty good, but today was better. I was more confident today.”
The SK Telecom Open is Wie’s eighth start in a men’s professional event. She played in four PGA Tour events and has competed on the Japan, Nationwide and Canadian tours, missing the 36-hole cut in all seven tournaments.
Since turning professional last year at 16, Wie missed the cut in the PGA’s Casio World Open and Sony Open. Wie finished third in March at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the first LPGA major.

“In the future, I still want to challenge the PGA Tour and make the top ten,” Wie said.
