I want to thank good friend to the proGram, Taj Weekes for being a guest supreme once aGain…We spoke of the new live album: “Pariah in Transit” (of which the cover art is a selection taken by Madison Photog, Michael Sullivan), we spoke of what it takes to kep the spirit alive and of the projects his TOCO organization has been working on…most recently track shoes to the children of St. Lucia for their track and field efforts, rather than socks made to look like shoes. His efforts on the island to help keep the children/people educated and healthy includes diabetes awareness and hula hoops. What a fantastic second half of the proGram. It is always special when long time friend of the proGram Miss Kim Manning rinGs in…..Her positive enerGy makes this show better than it could be without her presence. He P-Funk All Star ways are only a few of the exploits we discussed this time around, all the places she has gone including Australia, Russia, Japan and the Playboy Mansion..We discussed the new album coming soon, “Space Queen” and some potential book ideas….I believe we even sanG a quick duet….Ahhhhh Kimmy….Then we had another wonderfully creative and soulfully sweet guest in Mem Nahadr. The second portion of Sunday’s proGram was a gift from the earth. While just doing my on airness, the phone rinGs and it is Brother Larry McDonald. He was ringing in from Florida while tuned into the show. He was down the visiting and for the celebration of life help for Cedric IM Brooks. We spoke about Cedric with heavy hearts and fond memories of a man, who knew and took care of business. His horn was next to his head as the Ethiopian priest conducted the ceremony….We also reflected upon Larry’s visit to Stevens Point to do a talk on the HIS-story of Reggae music. What a treat the final third of the show was. Good friend to the proGram Todd Clouser rang in to discuss his solo show on May 9th at the Frequency. The making of A Love Electric‘s new album “The Naked Beat” and how adding the sinGing to his work became a natural proGression, but still on to get used to. It is always a treat to chat with Todd about his and others music. Speaking of others….Todd recently played a few gigs with John Medeski, who happened to be our bottom of the hour guest. John and I discussed in lenGth the making of his new album “A Different Time“, and perhaps his reasoning behind making this album “to be different”. We discussed how music and songs heal as well as the shared space we have in our ears for sound. It was a thrill to be able to talk to him about both Todd and friend of the show, Micro Rivard, the leader behind my Sun Ra, Club d’Elf….and to get a sort of feel what it is like for John to join this amoeba of characters making inspirational improvisational music.

It is always my pleasure to have true friends on the proGram telling us what is new via the way of what has been and crossing the paths of these stories. That’s exactly what good friend of the proGram, and of the G, Brother Larry McDonald is going to be doing this Tuesday at the UW Stevens Point. He is going to be giving a talk on the origins of Reggae music. ToGether he and I spoke of the ways it went from Ska to Rock Steady to Reggae. Larry spoke of the time Taj sent him off to get Bob Marley’s keyboard player, touring with SCRATCH at Coacheela this year and this was just a nice starting point for Brother Larry to prepare for Tuesday’s time with the youth. I am proud to have him as a friend, as a guest and as a musical partner through all these soundscapes. Here is a link to the event at UW Stevens Point. This sort of felt like a bonus portion of the show, so there was a little music with this:

This portion of the proGram was mostly filled with the words from artists as they make their way to and through. The first was Dessa, who will be in Madison at the Sett on the 19th. We spoke of her five piece touring group that will have both a band feel and that rapper on staGe feel. Her family in the Doomtree Collective was tops on her mind and how she makes her new album (soon to be dropped), with a hard hitting approach that will certainly be felt by the ears that give it a try.

…..The it was time for another episode of “Frail Pagans”….but this time it was an exclusive and a long distance affair. Victor was at Coachella with the Violent Femmes as they prepared to be back at it for the first time in six years. We spoke of their time preparing at the L.A. studio “3rd Encore” where Alice in Chains and Black Sabbath were right next door working. We spoke of Jonathan Winters and his abilities to make it happen in the moment without script of prior knowledge of the situation and how that translates into what the Femmes do at a live show. The exclusive was that they were going to play the entire 1st album as their time back toGether starts at Coachella.

This final portion of the show was filled with conversations. First was an artist I have been spinnin’ for yEARS and it was great to talk with Ron Levy about his new album and book…we swapped some quick stories about a shared beloved pal, Melvin Sparks and chords and harmonies/B.B. King and how he uses his ear memory. It was just like a conversation on this proGram was first started and intended. Then, ringing in riGht after Ron was Sallie Ford who made up for not ringing in the day before..we spoke of her show that evening at the Majestic and the new album. I was able to spin a few more tracks between that chat and a thrill of a good time convo with Freekbass. He and I talked about his Cincinnati Reds and my Red Sox, his album Concentrate and the work with Bootsy Collins on it, as well as almost all his records…Freek will be playing bass on tour in the Kelly Richey Band, and will stop here in Madison this Friday at the Harmony Bar. He also mentioned tales of a new album that included the words nasty and dirty, so now…that sounds like something to look funkward to. Here’s what the show looked like:

I want to thank Jans Ingber of the Motet for being a guest on the show. I’ve been following this story for what seems to be…no wait..it HAS BEEN years….I had the opportunity to speak to Ronny Drayton today, not because of his credits and status as a talented musician but because his son, Donovan has been incarcerated for years at Rikers Island without a shred of evidence to prove that he was guilty of anything, nevermind the terrible crime of murder. This conversation lasted a half of an hour and was a very heavy deal, which I know boiled the blood of many of the listeners out there. Please take the time to read Donovan and Ronny’s story written by friend of the proGram, Mr. Greg Tate and when you feel those words, hearing Ronny describe the situation (as deeply as he could), was so intense and emotion filled…..it was meaningful to be a part of it…and my hope and Ronny’s hope is that the next time he and I speak will be to share new music projects he is constantly involved/evolved in….as well as to celebrate the freedom of Donovan. While it stopped seeming important, there was music attached to this conversation…the three songs following the conversation w/Ronny are off a new album you can look into here (to help the cause).

I want to thank Mike Dillon for being a guest on the proGram. Mike is one of those musicians who happens to be involved with many projects that I have shared throughout the years. It is always a pleasured reminder when speaking to artists like Mike of why I choose to do radio, and especially the conversation with the artist themselves part. The Mike Dillon Band is in town opening for Umphrey’s McGee at the Orpheum and we discussed what the set up for that would be, including the players in the band, the instrumentation and the way this New Orleans Punk sound works along-side what other bands do. We spoke of the differences his new release “Urn” provides a listener, the experience of dead flowers in a vase vs. live flowers…We even touched on how some of those other projects of his (Garage a Trois, Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade) make their way into this new album and a live show. Wax Tailor was the House

After having “Wax Tailor” on the proGram to talk about the latest release, and what one could expect from the show on February 6th at the High Noon Saloon, one would think we would have been prepped for the event, you know, be ready for it. But as quick as the stage was on for Wax Tailor, we were brought into a story, a plot-line…an individual experience within a shared doing…..we we all going. We were featured in this film. The set was an experience pieced together by the visual minds eye escape as well as the surveyor of the crowd, the watchers of their surroundings got more than bargained for as well. The infamous WT soundbytes were the laces on the grooved up beat shoes, it held the story tiGht. It all made no…yet sense all at the same time. The music made it happen. The tunes got lush with funky lounged down and up grooves surrounded by a hip hop facilitation by Mattic on the Mic. He said it, he felt it and he meant it. When Charlotte Savary was on the stage, we were lured into a state of the otherworld, a hypnotic voyage where the words were ridden over the music, over the crowd….toGether but solo. When the show came to a close, it was one of those were you gather yourself back, and I swear I saw my name rolling down within the credits.

The middle portion of the show had a treat, not only was it the first full day of winter…but I had a chance to have a live on air conversation with Mr. Paul Winter. We discussed the 50th Anniversary Anthology of Count Me In 1962/1963, the adventure of being invited to the Kennedy White House and new work he is finishing up with a subtitle of “Migrating Birds Know No Boundaries” with the Great Rift Valley Orchestra. In talking, Mr. Winter and I found out we have a lot in common musically and otherwise and I look forward to keeping this new found friendship a bridge forward. Pokey LaFarge & South City Three

The Stoughton Opera House was a perfect spot to not just catch this show, but to be a part of it. Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three put on one hell of a rockabilly-jazz-jam with a side of Midwestern Blueswing that had the crowd hooked even before the first note was played. Pokey and the boys obviously had a great time playing and being in Milwaukee the night before so they guys were on a roll. These guys have a rolling commentary reminiscent the good ole days, with call backs from within the group to audience participation and all of this made the show get under your seat and light a fire. Even if you tried you miGht not be able to have a bad time. The sounds were ever more the hiGhlight. It is always a thrill to get samplings of the new material, and the boys brought some of those tunes to the front, while getting the point across with tunes like “Drinkin’ Whiskey Tonight”. This type of scene is more than a show, it is an event. One to look forward to as you mark it on your calendar’s the next chance you get. Certainly an event that was unique to that night, with no thought of doing the same ole thing on stage, we were laughing, stomping and clapping along. With the new album set to drop in the early spring, it was nice to hear those new tracks done, and done good. When Pokey and I chatted on air, he recalled how making the old sound new is really up to the listener, and I must say, the diversity sitting in the crowd proved one thing, dated or new, old or young….it sounded right on this night or any other.

JD McPherson’s High Noon

First off, I want to thank JD’s people for taking such good care of me with an invite to check out the show at the High Noon Saloon. The last time JD McPherson and the boys were in town was for the Orton Park Festival in last Summer and he and I had a chance to chat about what people could expect. And the people came out and they got what they wanted. The same can be said this time around at the High Noon when a big ole crowd got more of the same good times. JD (obviously nursing a sore throat or cold) and the boys took the roof and flipped it into a dancefloor with the rhythm-arock-a-billy stylin’s that can be listened to with ease. Jimmy Sutton on stand up bass too his whapp-a-bass stroke to higher levels and with a constant smile. The band was as tight as ever and oh so fun lovin’, if ever there were crowd pleasers, they can be found hanging out with these guys keepin’ the rocks-a-rollin’ and the feets-a-stompin’. JD featured many tracks off the wonderful 2012 release “Signs and Signifiers”, while the Jimmy led Bo Diddly moment brouGht back good memories of a friend. You can check out JD and the boys if they come to a town near you, but also on December 4th, they” be on Letterman. If they do come to a spot nearbye, maybe dress the part and follow your ears on down. Open the show was Joel Paterson and the Modern Sounds, who were a perfect match for this event.

It is always humbling to have friends on the proGram like Yonrico Scott. He will attest that most people know him from his Derek Trucks Band days, as we are all one tiGht family in that circle, but we spent time talking about the Royal Southern Brotherhood and how they just got back from Europe and are doing a run w/Gregg Allman in December, the new album “Be in My World” and how so much of life gets told in a story in his music….His music is always sayin’ something, in sound and spirit. I am blessed to know him and call him a friend. He and I mentioned the vibes and he was thrilled to hear that I’d be next speaking with Mr. Stefon Harris who will be here in Madison on the 29th as part of the Ninety Miles Project. Stefon and I spoke about the making of the album and the live way it took place, the sweat and the love of music we both share. Thollem in Madison

Last niGht I took myself out to the Frequency to catch some solo Thollem McDonas. After airing some tunes from Tsigoti and his Thollem/Parker/Cline – The Gowanus Sessions album on the proGram, I was thrilled to find out from him he’d be in these parts. In meeting Thollem I confirmed that cool is. He makes music that speaks to me and tonight (he actually let the opening act be the headliner as it was Grimm’s first time doing what he was doing in a live setting on his home court) the language was clear to my eyes and ears. It was like reading the book as it was being written. Notes running to and through and holding each other close by in a race to the end, a Black Friday frenzy in fact, ended his set, and visually I could see all the people that had been waiting in line for deals, leave the starting blocks as the doors finally opened. And the reasons they were there stayed only known to themselves. It is just there that I met and shook hands with Thollem and his music. There is a welcoming and comfortable moment with person and sound and I look forward to the next encounter. If you get the chance to have this encounter before I do aGain, I say make sure you put on your open minds and be prepared to write that new story.

The Wood Brothers in Madison

Since I decided to make radio a part of my world, an active part, there have been certain artists that I feel a connection to because of their stories within the music. The Wood Brothers are just as important to me as the early on nursery rhymes and Richard Scary books. Chris’ band MMW produces sounds that are engrained within my mindsapce as a staple in my musical diet, and Oliver’s former band King Johnson is like a reunion of favorite uncles gathered toGether doing things that they tell you: “Don’t tell your parents”. After interviewing Chris and talking about how they have left such a mark, it was easy to hear in his voice that he was pleased that I get where they are coming from. And that I convey that to the listeners in story form and track selection. And get it we did on this night when they came to Madison and did their thing at the Majestic Theater. They graced us with new renditions of some old treats, some teases of new tunes but mostly it was a continuation of familiar tales, told in a voice that has an extra something, a lunging forward rocking chair step that kept making me feel like I was on the front porch and the dinner bell was ringing. I can hear the screen door closing now….BAM. Satisfied but not too full is how I left this show. Sound like a musical meal you’d like to try. I’d hope so.

It was another episode of Frail PaGans that resembled the preamble to my constitution, the riGht to and the reminder to, no matter. Stories of times in the past of first level pulls or ballot checks…Victor and I brouGht home the point and the reminder that our global family depends on us building that bridge. I also had the honor of having Chris Wood of the Wood Brothers on the program. We spoke of the upcoming show this Friday at the Majestic, the new live CD which features versions of tunes recorded right here at the Majestic last time round….we went over the track “Doppler” from the newest live Medeski Martin & Wood album “Free Magic” and spoke of his and Oliver’s fathers influence on them as musicians and performers.
